Seeking apartment dwelling local K-W folks interested in composting all of their food waste and contributing to soil health on an all season urban farm. I compost outdoors in-ground year-round, in rodent excluded systems. You would collect it via a stink free easy Japanese anaerobic fermentation method, let it sit for a few weeks and then I would pick up the bucket or you can drop it off at the farm. Meat and dairy are ok but pet waste is not. Please help spread the word. FYI, if you read about how it is done, you do not need to drain the liquid. I never do and have no issues.

The Bokashi indoor compost system with bin is an effective way to compost food scraps & create nutrient-rich soil that will grow stronger, healthier plants!

Anyone want an order of lettuce and tender collards/kale before the heat sets in? I also have gorgeous New Zealand spinach and celery. Move over cool season crops, it's time for summer greens. All the brassicas will be replaced except for black magic kale, the only one resistant to bacterial soft rot.
Welcome summer climate adapted space saving leafy greens:
4 types of amaranth, longevity vine, New Zealand spinach, lagos spinach, sweet potato, chia, sunchoke, cantaloupe, Egyptian spinach, parsley, dahlia, hollyhock and more. Some of these double as root/flower/fruit crops too. You can pick your favourites. 1 bag for $10 and a minimum $15 for delivery (which can include tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, peas, edible and tasty flowers).

As a fundraiser for the Midtown Food Forest, a community garden located on KCI property, I am selling seedlings grown in collaboration with KCI and King Edward Public School students.
2 for $5 for standard sizes or $3.50 for large seedlings.
Most are planted in biodegradable pots.

Tromboncino squash/zucchini (resistant to squash vine borer, roots along the stem and needs room)

New Zealand spinach (a must have summer/fall green that just keeps giving)

So here is the mother of them all...and her babies. These sweet potatoes have fed us delicious and nutritious leaves pretty well everyday for 4 months. Move over lettuce. You can't do that. Pictured here are the vines of these beauties (losing up to10 leaves a day from our harvesting on each plant).

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! Please join me at an event I am involved in next Sunday relevant to the changing season. My son, Soren and his friends are providing lunchtime music.
The Food Systems Roundtable of Waterloo Region invites you to our ongoing Skill Share Series. This October, join us as we explore how to put fruit trees to rest outside, as well as how to grow microgreens indoors during our colder months! This event will be hosted along with the Laurier Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, with hopes that participants can contribute their knowledge of local food systems to ongoing research.
This community event will take place on October 19th, 2025, from 10 am-1 pm in Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School's (KCI) food forest and green industries classroom (greenhouse). Parking and lunch will be provided. Participation is free, but space is limited; please register through this Eventbrite to secure your spot. We will be accepting donations and memberships for the Food Systems Roundtable of Waterloo Region during the event to cover workshop expenses and support lunchtime musicians. Donations will help us run future events and projects, including a larger Skill Share event in 2026!

I wish it were winter. I hate summer growing. Weeds, weeds, weeds, watering, critters, pests, heat, trellising, and everything grows so fast I can't keep up. There, that's it for my temper tantrum and now I will deal!

A few days to harvest and then back to the deep cold. My clients are being flooded with leaves, as the indoor greens and microgreens still need to be harvested despite this outdoor thaw. Lots to donate to the community this week as well. What a feeling.

Things I've learned this year:
Snow removal is a far more pleasant job for the winter farmer than dealing with ice (especially for this Norwegian).
Before or during extended cold snaps, watering is actually important. Cold air dries out the soil and moisture holds in heat.

The coldest nights of the year are filled with ceremony and quiet gratitude, as I cover the tunnels to get them through. It brings me back to having my eyelashes frozen under the Northern Lights of a Sami community in northern Norway. The colours here are inside the tunnels and from my hand felted naturally dyed fabric, a guardian dragon and the rich woven blankets, graciously loaned from a Latvian client. There will be some losses but we need this cold and so I celebrate. The winter gardening gives a silver lining to our warmer and erratic winters. This season, however, has been gold.
