We planted over 100 peonies on our farm last fall, but we won’t be picking a single stem from them this year. Here’s why:
Remember learning about photosynthesis in school? Plants perform photosynthesis in their leaves and stems. This gives them energy they need to grow and establish!
When picking stems for cut flowers, farmers cut deep into the plant in order to get the longest stem length possible for bouquets. But cutting long stems means less leaves for plants to do photosynthesis.
Flower farmers typically wait a few years before harvesting peony stems so the plant has time to do lots of photosynthesis and store lots of energy. This means the plant will be happier, larger, and healthier in the long run!
It’s also common for flower farmers to remove peony flowers from the plant for the first year or two, so that the plant puts less energy into making the flowers that will eventually form seeds. This means it could be years before farmers even see a flower on their plants!
So remember, if you have a newly planted peony in your garden, try to refrain from bringing the flowers indoors for the first few years. Or, if you must, then just cut shorty stems, like this one!
