Wonder how we keep our bees warm in the winter? 🐝❄️

We wrap the hives with winter insulation, which adds a snug layer that helps reduce heat loss and blocks chilly winds. With this extra support, the bees use less feed over winter and head into spring stronger 🌼

With the new season here, leaves are changing and drifting down. We may feel tempted to tidy them up, but those fallen leaves are winter homes for helpful critters. Leave them where they are, or rake them into your garden beds, and let beneficial insects overwinter so they can support your garden in spring. 🍂🐞

Field trip recap📣 New this fall season in our Field Trip program, the Totem Pole Learning Station 🪾

Students had the chance to inquire, observe, reflect, and respond through art. They spent time with Gerry and our team learning about the cedar log and the cultural meaning behind different animals and the values they represent. Afterwards, they created their own totem designs as a reflection of what they learned. The drawings were incredible! 🌲📚

It is garlic planting season. 🧄
Mid October to mid November is a good time to tuck cloves into the soil before hard frost. We added organic compost, planted point up, then covered with mulch, so they are cozy for winter and ready for a strong start in spring. 🌿

Huge thank you to our farm and education staff, and to every volunteer who showed up in sun and rain. From caring for animals to guiding stations and harvesting for donations, you made this fall season incredible.💛

We are now closed for the winter season. ☃️ Through winter, we will prep new beds, care for animals, and build resources for spring programs. Follow along for winter updates and spring sign ups. 💚 See you next year!

Happy Halloween from Stable Harvest Farm. 🎃

Besides Racer (the classic carving pumpkins), we also grow Baby Bear, Cinnamon Girl, Dill’s Giant, Wee Be Little, and colourful heirlooms. 🍂 All of these were donated to local organizations and schools just in time for Halloween. 🎁🌱

Vampire issues? We have the cure. 🧄🧛‍♂️

Earlier this fall, our garlic and onions were harvested and cured in a warm, airy space for about 2 to 3 weeks. This resting period dried the outer skins, protected the bulbs, and brought out their flavor. Once ready, they are stored and ready to be shared with our community partners. 🧅🧄
