Absolutely not.

Longhorns aren’t for everyone. They aren’t built to make money at auction, take longer to gain weight and are skilled fence crawlers. Plus they can have some opinions with those horns of theirs.

But they are also hardy, thrive on lesser quality inputs, make beautiful art both in the pasture and on the wall and they are the best protein I have raised. My 2.5yr old longhorn steers that had never been fed a lick of grain and were raised with what I can only call benign neglect were the absolute best tasting beef I have put on a plate. Longhorns will always have a place on my property and wish more people appreciated them so I could raise more šŸ˜…

Deep in my feelings today. All the changes that were on the horizon have arrived. Moving out of the house I have been in for over 10 years. Huge changes at work. My oldest graduating. And somehow perpetually in the same place on the ranch, wanting to grow but not sure how to.

But I do take comfort in the fact that I have yet to shy away from anything that challenges me. I can confidently look back when I am 95 and say I tried everything and pushed myself when I felt fear or was uncertain. I built a small cattle operation. I started the c**t. I became and am becoming the medic and firefighter that I would want coming to save me. I raised an incredible 18yr old.

All this to say that I think this will work out. I think I’ll figure out how to make this operation grow on one income and working full time off the farm. I’ll find land to rent and work more hours to afford more cattle. It isn’t always easy getting into the truck at 0600 to go work another OT shift, but I’m willing to give up some days and work harder in order to have the future I want.

To quote a friend of mine, ā€œI’d rather have two cookies later than one cookie now.ā€

And at the end of it no matter what happens - at least I can look back and say I tried.

Cows hide their calves all the time. The difference in this case is baby didn’t answer mom. I watched her searching this area and calling and calling and when I came back a while later I saw her leaving the pasture on her own. So I got pretty nervous at that and went and did a search. I’ll head back later to see if she looked for him again and if not I’ll reunite them.

Literally living my best life over here.

Big plans come June 1st! For anyone who isn’t already in the know, I’m moving onto the farm in June. I am so thrilled to have the ability to live on the farm and not commute (even though it’s a 30s drive). This will make rehabbing and retrofitting the facilities so much easier to manage and give me the time and space to figure out what works for me and my operation.

On the non negotiable list this year is cleaning up all the garbage in the pens, finishing the round pen, fixing lots and lots of fence, replacing the front steps and hopefully getting the hay shed put back together after the wind ruined the west facing wall.

Will supply beer and pizza to anyone willing to stand on a questionable ladder and replace tin šŸ˜…

I want to start sharing more of the day to day stuff that is going on on the farm. Good and bad and sort of just talking to you guys more. I move onto the farm for June 1st and have lots of work and clean up to do to turn it into the facility I know it has the potential to be! Cattle handling and calving facilities. Fixing the hay shed. Fencing. For the love of god better fencing. Horses and isolation paddocks, round pens and an outdoor arena. So hit that follow button if you want to watch me struggle but also definitely succeed.

If you want someone to put miles on nice horses, or be started with a solid foundation creating brave horses that understand their job, you can’t go wrong with Amanda and her program. She has done wonders for me and my horses and given me the confidence to start my own. Get in before her books fill up!

Unfortunately my reach is still being restricted and I am ā€˜not recommendable’ - this is very frustrating and I have not been able to communicate with a person to get clarification on what actions my page took. When I check, it gives me the all clear saying the page has no issues and no listed infractions. Given Facebook was the only avenue I was making money from my social media I am and continue to be disappointed at the inability to resolve this.
