🌱 Week 7 of the CSA—and this one came with a little extra adventure! 🌪️🌧️

At first glance, this week’s CSA bags might look pretty ordinary: potatoes, celery, peppers, cherry tomatoes and more. But getting those vegetables from the field into your bags this week was anything but ordinary.

Last Saturday’s storm wreaked havoc on gardens and farms across the area—including ours. 🌬️⛈️ So this week, we’ve been sorting, salvaging and searching through the fields for the survivors. And we’re happy to say that CSA members are still getting a variety of fresh, farm-grown produce this week! 🥔🌶️🍅

That’s one of the unique things about being part of a CSA.

You’re not just picking up a weekly bag of vegetables. You’re supporting the farm from the very first seed order to the very last harvest and coming along for the wild ride that is a growing season.

And wow… what a ride this year has been. 😅

Extreme rain.
Damaging winds.
Pesky bunnies. 🐰
Annoying aphids.
Hungry moose. 🫎
And now… disastrous hail. ⛈️

In a good year, CSA bags are overflowing with some of our best harvests in all their seasonal variety.

In a tough year, CSA members are still our priority—because they made the commitment to support the farm week after week, regardless of what Mother Nature decides to throw our way.

PRODUCE MAY BE SHORT, BUT THE FARM STORE IS FULL! 🫙

The storm and hail damage have taken a toll on this week’s fresh produce, but we’re making the most of what we have—and we’ve got LOTS of new canned and preserved goodies to choose from! 💚

✨ From our wonderful handpicked chokecherries come Chokecherry Jam & Chokecherry Syrup!
🥒 Dilled Beans have been added to our preserved collection.
🥒 Sweet & Sour Pickles are back in stock!

And there’s still plenty more to fill your pantry and freezer. 🫙

Saturday, September 6th is our LAST Sunset Beach Flea Market of 2026! Come out and see us one more time before the season wraps up. 🛍️🌱

Rain. Hail. Wind.

Not exactly the combination farmers want to see during harvest season. 🌾

We’re still assessing the damage from the storm, but unfortunately, we already know it’s going to be a tough one.

The shed we had just repaired and moved out of the shop didn’t fare well. 😔 Our crops and garden also received wind and hail damage. 🌱

And we’re not alone. Farmers throughout our area are reporting significant damage, with some losing entire fields. 💔 We can only hope Mother Nature settles down and that our garden is able to bounce back.

This is one of the hardest parts of farming. You can spend months planning, planting, nurturing and preparing for harvest—only to have one storm change everything in a matter of hours. ⛈️

These unpredictable setbacks can have an enormous impact on a farm—not only on this season’s harvest, but also on a farmer’s livelihood.

As harvest season gets underway, please keep farmers in your thoughts. 🌾❤️

If you know a farmer, reach out. A simple message asking, “Is there anything you need help with right now?” can mean more than you realize. If you’re able to lend a hand, offer something specific—or simply take the time to listen. 🤝

Farmers are resilient, but they shouldn’t have to weather the hard days alone.

If you know a farmer who may be struggling, send them a private message or a little encouragement today. ❤️

🌿 The garden is all about balance. 🐞

Take a closer look at those beautiful dill flowers and you’ll notice something we’re currently battling on the farm—the little speckles covering the stems and flower heads are aphids. 🐜

But nature has its own way of keeping things in check. While the aphids are busy feeding, the ladybugs are hard at work hunting them down and enjoying their next meal. 🐞

It’s a constant balance between pests and predators, and sometimes the best approach is to let nature’s little helpers do their job. We may not love seeing an aphid infestation, but we sure appreciate the predators that show up to help control the population. 🌱

Farming with nature means working with the ecosystem—not against it. 💚

But what exactly is swathing?

Swathing is when the crop is cut and laid into long, narrow rows called swaths. This allows the crop to finish drying evenly before the combine comes through to pick it up and separate the grain. 🌾

For us, seeing those neat rows across the field means one thing… harvest is getting closer! 👀🚜

There’s a lot of work between planting and harvest, and every pass through the field brings us one step closer.

From crisp cucumbers to garden-fresh tomatoes, colourful beets and freshly dug baby potatoes, Week #6 of the Fresh Field Farms CSA is packed with the flavours of late summer! 🌿

That’s a whole lot of fresh, locally grown Saskatchewan produce ready to turn into salads, sides, snacks, sauces and easy weeknight meals. And the best part? It was grown right here on the farm. 💚
