Whether you want isopods for a planted terrarium, or as part of a bioactive cleanup crew it is important to know where they fall on the scale of protein aggression. Higher protein aggression means you will need to feed the isopods foods higher in protein and may need to supplement their diet with something like fish flakes. This can be even more imperative for using isopods as a cleanup crew in an enclosure. Some kinds of isopods should be avoided with certain animals unless they are going to be given enough protein. While powder orange and blue or a. vulgare are safe for nearly any animal, isopods such as the dairy cow, giant canyon and spinny could seriously harm animals such as smaller frogs and lizards, especially when their are not getting their dietary needs met with supplemental protein. However, that does not make these isopods obsolete! Giant Canyon Isopods are an excellent choice for more arid snakes and big lizards due to their lower humidity needs and dairy cows are a great choice for medium and large snakes! This is because the waste produced by carnivorous animals like snakes contain lots of protein for a little isopod! :)
