Mans Organics Produce Is Back

We have fresh locally-grown Mans Organics back in the store – beautiful heirloom tomatoes for colorful salads and delicious sandwiches, flavorful grape tomatoes for tossing into a spring salad, crispy long English cucumbers to be sliced onto a plate, crunchy mini cukes for eating out of hand, and a bright assortment of bell peppers to give a splash of color to your meal.

Comparison of Mans Greenhouse Organics and Hydroponically Grown Products
Mans Organics is soil based, with compost input. It’s similar to how we grow our food, except with more heat and protection from environmental elements, like wind and snow.

Healthy soil with good structure is of prime importance to Mans Organics. Also, organic certification requires that produce be grown in soil.

Hydroponic agriculture is very artificial. It is a process of growing plants without soil by adding nutrients to the water. It might seem impressive that that much food can be grown in a small area, but that isn't the whole picture.

Just to provide the phosphorus fertilizer, there's a strip mine to harvest the ore, a smelting plant to refine it, and a fluoride waste stream. Hydroponic agriculture doesn't use less land than our gardens do. Just like feedlots don't use less land than range cattle do. The appearance is deceiving.

Also, hydroponic plants don't coexist symbiotically with microbiology. There are no fungi, nematodes or beetles. There is no ecosystem. As far as I can tell, it's about the same as a lab-grown hamburger. I like my veggies with dirt on them.

Harvest Haven Pasture Raised Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast – These tasty nuggets are back!. Tender, juicy, and moist chicken breasts that are full of flavor, perfect every time!

Savor Organic Balsamic Vinegar, 250 mL – This Balsamic Vinegar is produced from organically grown grapes in the Modena District in central Italy. It is aged in the wood barrels of the traditional Solera Method, giving it a wonderful, mellow, sweet, and sour essence with a delicately balanced, fruity, and full-flavored finish.
Brush it on roasted chicken, grilled salmon, or drizzle it on roasted carrots. Toss sliced strawberries or peaches with a drizzle of balsamic and a pinch of sugar, and let them sit for 20 minutes. Then, spoon them over vanilla ice cream. Add a splash of balsamic to meatballs or burgers. The acidity adds tenderness and makes richer meats like beef or lamb taste even richer and more savory!

Grilled Chicken Breast

Ingredients

3 cloves Harvest Haven garlic, finely chopped

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

2 Tbsp. brown sugar

1 tsp. dried rosemary

1 tsp. dried thyme

4 boneless, skinless Harvest Haven chicken breasts

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Chopped fresh parsley, for serving

Instructions

In a medium bowl, whisk garlic, vinegar, oil, brown sugar, rosemary, and thyme; generously season with salt and pepper. Reserve 1/4 cup marinade for grilling.

Add chicken to bowl and toss to combine. Cover bowl and refrigerate at least 20 minutes and up to overnight.

Prepare a grill for medium-high heat; preheat 5 minutes. Grill chicken, basting with reserved marinade and turning halfway through, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part registers 165°F, about 6 minutes per side.

Transfer chicken to a platter. Top with parsley.

Around the Farm

We Survived the Monsoon

After a cold and snowy spring, the guys were finally able to move the broilers to pasture. There were a few days of very hot weather, then the monsoon hit. The first storm with lots of thunder and lightning literally dumped one and a half inches of rain on the farm in an hour in the evening. Then, we had three days of rain and a strong, cold north wind. Total rainfall was seven and a half inches, which is close to the yearly average of ten inches for this area.

This kind of weather is not good for chickens. The pens on pasture keep them semi-dry, but something more had to be done.

The quote for this issue of the newsletter is, “You’ll never get bored when you try something new. There’s really no limit to what you can do,” from Dr. Seuss. Martin had an idea for something new.

He borrowed an industrial hot air blow dryer from a friend, hooked it up to a generator, and attached large dryer vents to it. And it worked. Each cage of chickens would get a few minutes of hot air to dry the birds’ feathers. The birds seemed to like it, and it kept them alive.

June is the rainy season here, so there’s still more moisture to come. But the chickens have been transferred from the field to the freezer, so no more worries.

The sheep and beef cattle have been moved to their pastures, so they’re enjoying the good life. The rain won’t bother them out there.

Marseilles’ ducks, Sunny, Shadow, and Malcolm, obviously enjoy all the worms that come to the surface when it’s wet. This has been great weather for ducks.

Talking about ducks, Jeannie’s first batch of ducklings has really grown. They’ll be heading to the pond soon.

Her second batch of babies is so sweet. These little guys are doing well, too.

The Dr. Suess quote is so true. "You’ll never get bored when you try something new. There’s really no limit to what you can do.”

More New Products – Cheeks Ahoy Kitchen Towels and Napkins

Cheeks Ahoy was started in Peterborough, Ontario, by Leah Black when she had her first baby. She wanted to eliminate plastic waste and unhealthy ingredients that were found in the conventional baby wipes.

She sewed up her first batch of reusable wipes out of some old flannel bed sheets and created a gentle wipe solution. Not only did this eliminate the waste created from disposable wipes, but she also found the reusable wipes and solution to be much more effective and versatile!

The wipes became so popular with other new moms that Leah was encouraged to sell them locally. Thus, Cheeks Ahoy was born.

The company now offers a range of zero-waste household reusables, two of which we now carry in the store.

Organic Muslin Kitchen Towels

These lovely lightweight towels are quick to dry and just the right size, measuring at 27"x18". The muslin fabric is buttery soft and gentle on your skin, making it perfect for use as a hand towel, tea towel, or even a burp cloth if there's a little one in your arms!

The towels are made from 100% organic cotton, which means that they're not only gentle on your skin but also on the environment, making them a sustainable and responsible choice.

Organic Brushed Cotton Cocktail Napkins

These small but mighty napkins are 100% organic cotton, brushed for softness. Use them as hankies, napkins, in kids’ lunch boxes, for camping, or makeup removal—then toss them in the wash and reuse.

Care: Fabric is not pre-washed, so wash and dry before use. To clean, loosen stains with a cold rinse first, if necessary, then wash on warm or hot with like colours using your detergent of choice. Tumble or hang to dry. Fabric will naturally become softer and reach maximum absorbency after a few wash cycles. Expect some shrinkage.

Both products are handmade in Peterborough, Ontario.
