One hundred and fifty years ago the Hudson’s Bay Company began construction of Fort Berens on a sage-brush covered bench on the east side of the Fraser River, at Lillooet, British Columbia. This trading fort was to serve the thousands of prospectors who flocked to the Lillooet region in search of gold. The fort was never completed and the fertile river bench was used instead for the growing of mel

ons, tomatoes and alfalfa. Located in the magnificent Fraser Canyon, that historic site is now home to Fort Berens Estate Winery, Lillooet’s first winery and vineyard. In keeping with the pioneering spirit of the Gold Rush era, we are creating a new and unique wine experience in British Columbia, offering superb, distinct, hand-crafted wines.

Felecia is our Farm Supervisor, she helps manage our vineyard and our vineyard crew, and she's also our resident snake charmer!

While snakes can be scary for some people, we appreciate these resident snakes because they are very beneficial to our vineyard. They help to create a healthy and biologically diverse ecosystem. They hunt insects as well as mice, which can damage young vines by gnawing on grape shoots and roots.

Felecia helps lead the way in our vineyard with a strong commitment to sustainable grape growing. Our sustainable farming practices not only help grow high quality grapes for our wines here at Fort Berens, but they also nurture a connection to nature and our community.

Sometimes unexpected issues can lead to unexpected surprises. Soma from Random Nomad Lens recently had unexpected car issues and ended up with a stop in Lillooet. The stop allowed Soma the opportunity to visit our winery and taste our wines.

Soma shared via email, "I had the pleasure of tasting your wines today and was kindly assisted by Aaliyah—such a great experience. While at your property, I captured some beautiful photos that I’d love to share with you. Thanks again for the warm experience, and I hope you enjoy the photos!"

Thank you Soma for your kind comments, for taking the time to provide this lovely feedback about your wine tasting with Aaliyah, and for sharing your beautiful photos.

We have bud break! This is Cabernet Franc in our Dry Creek Vineyard.

It's one day earlier than bud break last year in these same vines. Cabernet Franc in our estate Dry Creek Vineyard is typically where we see our first bud break. This is such an exciting time in the vineyard as things start to change almost daily!

Anthony Gismondi named our Riesling Reserve 2023, the B.C. Wine of the Week, this weekend in The Vancouver Sun.

He awarded the wine 91 points, and described it as follows, "The Reserve Riesling is more tightly structured, with sharp acidity that highlights its tropical notes, while quince notes add bitterness, enhancing a mineral undertone. It is a complex wine that the Germans might describe as gastronomic because of its high acidity. The texture feels slightly creamy, which helps balance the overall profile. It is estate-grown, with fruit from Dry Creek Vineyard, planted in 2009, and Red Rock Vineyard, planted in 2019. The ideal pairing would be a sesame-ginger stir-fry or pork with garlic and lemon."
