Thought we’d better share a spring update before summer officially arrives. The 2026 growing season started with bumper crops of maple syrup and shiitakes. We’ve also hosted Sugar Shack Feasts and a mushroom log workshop for our members, got all of the critters out on pasture, planted one of our gardens to perennials (including strawberries, raspberries, haskaps, and asparagus), tended the grapevines, and planted a bunch of veggies. Never a dull moment around here!

My favourite part of being a maple producer is managing our sugarbush for health and productivity. I was able to spend a few days last week selectively removing ironwood trees that were competing with some of our youngest maples. I then cut the medium diameter trunks into 4’ lengths for growing shiitakes, while the tops and larger diameter stuff was cut into firewood for boiling sap in 2027. Don’t get me wrong, I like the syruping part too, and am happy to be boiling sap as I write this post.

Hard to believe that we were still harvesting veggies and pasturing chickens out here just a week ago. This weather has us digging into our storage crops and settling into our winter routines. Hope you are eating well and staying warm on these short, cold, and snowy days.

While ruminants are the ultimate forage converters, our Kunekunes are pasture kings and queens in the world of pigs. Watching ruminants graze is a thing of beauty, watching Kunekunes graze is just plain fun!

This week’s lamb harvest marks the end of our ruminant grazing season. These lambs were moved to fresh pasture daily, starting at the vineyard helping to manage cover crops and finishing the season at the farm following the cattle in rotation. Grazing ruminants is, if not the most efficient, definitely the most beautiful way of harnessing solar energy. While spending less time tending to livestock is welcomed this time of year, we look forward to getting ruminants back on the ground here in the spring harnessing solar energy, enriching our soils while sequestering carbon, and producing delicious nutrient dense food for humans.

While it seems like these boys arrived just yesterday, after 150 pasture rotations and the growing season winding down, we harvested these steers this week. We treated these beasts with care and kindness, and are grateful for the contributions they made to our soil and for the nutrient dense food they will provide to our members in the months ahead. Best wishes everyone for a weekend filled with friends, family, gratitude, and delicious, nutrient dense, local food.

We did a thing on the weekend. What started five years ago as an evening to celebrate the grape harvest has turned into something more - which is good because we lost all of our grapes to the critters this year. We gathered on Saturday to enjoy the abundance of this season, and to celebrate our Farmshare Members who have joined me on this journey of finding a better way to feed the humans. Huge thank you to Mast for preparing an incredible farm to table dinner to mark the occasion, to his team for supporting us in that, and to Alex for the perfect music to accompany the evening!
