Spotlight (literally) on Trixie! 🐮

Trix is our big, babied Holstein. Trixie is a Freemartin, meaning she was born a twin to a bull. When this happens, the two calves in utero share a blood supply, exposing the female to male hormones, which influence the development of her reproductive system.

90-95 % of Freemartins are sterile. Holsteins are milking cows, and of course, need to be bred (pregnant) to produce milk. That means that Trixie is a milking cow, who can never make milk! This is why she ended up with us at only just a few weeks old.

Holsteins are known to be big, loving and docile cows. They’re on the bonier side, and can often be mistaken for underweight.

🐄Trixies likes:
Her heat lamp, or “spotlight”
Coming inside every night to a fresh, warm bed of straw and wood shavings
Head scratches
Jumping really high
Running really fast
Eating her oats
Eating oats that don’t belong to her
Eating more oats

🐄Trixies dislikes:
Touching her horns
Any weather except sunshine
When she goes into her stall and her grain is not waiting for her
Being ridden (trust us, we’ve tried)

Every animal has a person, and Trixies person is Connor Sager! Property manager, and big fan of cows.
