For many months, my Substack sat dormant, less a failure of imagination than a collective refusal of the work to be rushed. Some of these essays have been years in the making, undergoing the quiet, iterative evolutions that occur when a piece is left to breathe. Recently, however, a shift occurred. As I closed a significant chapter, that hiatus has dissolved into a sudden, intense period of output. Though I have been fairly prolific these last months, this is not a sudden burst of novelty; it is a creative harvest, the distillation of long-gestating drafts into their final forms. It is also an expansion. Alongside these essays, I am currently at work on a culinary memoir and a collection of short stories. There is a particular, sharp clarity that accompanies an ending, and this current chapter feels like a homecoming, a moment where patient preparation finally aligns with a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you for reading Heart of an Artichoke, and for your continued support. If this piece resonated with you, please consider leaving a comment and clicking the heart; both are deeply appreciated.

Join the Team: Become a Forest City Culinary Facilitator

Forest City Culinary Experiences is looking for passionate storytellers and food experts to guide our award-winning tours. We don’t just show people where to eat; we connect them to the soul of London’s food scene.

The Role: A Master of the "Insider" Experience

As a facilitator, you are the bridge between the farm and the table. Your primary stage is the historic Covent Garden Market, and the culinary scene in downtown London, where you will:

* Lead the Narrative: Guide guests through the vibrant market aisles, sharing the venue's history and the "insider" secrets only a local expert knows.
* Foster Connections: Introduce participants to our community of farmers, artisanal bakers, and specialty vendors, helping them build direct relationships with the people behind their food.
* Curate Tastings: Facilitate progressive tasting sessions that highlight the seasonal terroir of Southwestern Ontario.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking individuals with professional industry familiarity and a deep, inter-generational insight into local food culture. Ideal candidates are:

* Passionate Educators: Enthusiastic about sharing knowledge on heritage ingredients and sustainable food systems.
* Engaging Storytellers: Capable of turning a simple tasting into a memorable gastro-cultural journey.
* Community Focused: Dedicated to profiling regional food artisans and ecological farmers.

The Living Library: Why Closing the Blackfriars Doors Doesn’t End the Story

The decision to close our doors after 30 years is not an admission of defeat; rather, it is a deliberate act of preservation. Every creative venture has a natural lifecycle, and recognizing the right moment to conclude a physical chapter after three decades of service is a mark of stewardship. By choosing to step back now, we protect the integrity of everything Blackfriars has come to represent, ensuring that its mission remains a standard of quality rather than a diluted version of its former self.

In its final years, Blackfriars evolved into something far greater than a traditional bistro; it became a masterclass in regional sustainability and a pillar of Southwestern Ontario’s culinary identity. This era was defined by a shift toward stewardship, in which the restaurant served as a hub of gastronomic wisdom and a standard-bearer of a "slow food-inspired" ethos. Through the introduction of the Blackfriars Emporio, Forest City Culinary Experiences and our "Ark of Taste" explorations, we moved beyond the dining room to celebrate the unique terroir of our land, from the discovery of rare indigenous pawpaws to the daily rhythm of farm-to-table staples.

However, a closure is not a disappearance; it is a transformation. While our daily operations may be ending, the intellectual property and creative pulse of Blackfriars will continue to beat through our digital archives and a new, more agile presence. We are shifting from a static location to a dynamic culinary force, bringing Blackfriars back in the forms that allow us to be most present with the community: through curated pop-ups, local farmers markets, catering and eventually a cookbook.

The work stored in our archives is not static; it is a repository of wisdom that remains as relevant today as the day it was created. Our recipes were never mere instructions; they were records of a season. By highlighting the seasonality of our ingredients and our deep roots in the community, these archives continue to advocate for a more thoughtful way of eating. They serve as a guide for those who still value the patience required to wait for the first harvest of spring or the deep, roasted comfort of winter roots.

In this sense, Blackfriars isn't ending; it is evolving. We are trading a fixed footprint for a versatile legacy. We are no longer defined by a single address, but by the quality of our craft and the strength of our connections. We look back at our archives to stay grounded and honour the local producers who built this story alongside us. After a rest, we will move on to farmers’ markets and pop-ups to ensure that the Blackfriars spirit stays alive, active, and delicious. We look back not out of nostalgia, but to ensure that the wisdom we gathered over time continues to fuel the inspiration for whatever comes next.
