Hands up if you’ve heard of haskap berries!

This week’s w**e is made with organic haskap berries, grown right here in BC’s Okanagan and it’s perfect for any Valentine’s Day celebration.

Haskap berries are renowned as a super food, delivering triple the antioxidants and four times the anthocyanins of blueberries, as well as containing a high level of vitamin C.

So how are haskap berries at making w**e?

A haskap producer, called Echo Haskap, has collaborated with Kalala Organic Estate W**ery to produce a fortified Haskap w**e called Rara Avis, and the results are excellent (in my humble opinion).

Rara Avis means Rare Bird in Latin.

The back of the bottle describes this w**e as luscious, and I would say that this is an apt description. Medium garnet in colour, Rara Avis has aromas of black plum, prune, India ink, dried blackcurrant, dried cherry, orange rind, vanilla, sweet spice, coffee and buttered digestive biscuits. This full bodied, fortified (18.5% ABV) dessert w**e is well balanced, with high acidity, low, powdery tannins and a medium+ finish. The palate is concentrated, offering flavours of strawberry jam, ripe raspberries, espresso, black plums, prunes, dried blackcurrants, dried cherries and sweet spice, with a underlying mineral/saline quality that makes your mouth water and keeps you coming back for another sip.

Pair with a cheese plate, your favourite chocolate dessert, or simply enjoy a glass on its own after a special meal.

"Margarita told us a bit about this super berry and why BC is a good fit with respect to growing conditions: “Haskap [berries] have been cultivated and celebrated over the centuries in Japan, in the Hokkaido area and far eastern Russia. This is a berry that loves and thrives in cold weather…our farm location in the Okanagan (Creighton Valley), we have cold nights, cold winters and hot summers, and it seems like all these differences in temperature is very beneficial for the Haskap berry. Haskap is considered a super berry because it’s a very hearty plant, so it protects itself and has the strengths which it passes through its roots and stem.”

🍷 "...Fragrant with dark berry aromas and gently sweet on the palate with cassis, crushed raspberry, dark chocolate, Christmas baking spices, the made-in-British Columbia dessert w**e is balanced with bright, juicy acidity and was an amazing pairing, lightly chilled, with several ;) dark chocolate Lebkuchen (gingerbread) cookies, and I think it would also be a great pairing with any dark chocolate and berry dessert (hint, hint...
