We never actually asked for Loretta. In fact, never in our wildest dreams had we ever thought our lives would include a llama. But here we are.

Loretta is always alert, suspicious, and we think largely full of disdain. She’s the least affectionate animal on the farm.

When you visit the farm, be sure to find Loretta and say hello. She’ll ignore you. She won’t trust you. She’ll be wary of you. But this old, scarred, weary, wonderful animal is as lovable as the newest lamb.

We have a small batch of Sasso Ivory chicks (hatched on Tuesday) available immediately.

According to the hatchery:
“The SASSO Ivory is a highly productive layer perfectly blended with traditional characteristics. It delivers the most eggs of our coloured layers with 325 large, brown eggs in its first year of production and weighs 4.5 lbs at 75 weeks. For added practicality, day-old chicks hatched from the Ivory are feather-sexable. If you are looking for a highly adaptable and productive layer, the Ivory may be the right fit for your operations. Males in this breed weigh approximately 4 lbs at 12 weeks.”

We also have some ready-to-lay Red S*x Link hens, also available immediately. “The Red S*x-Link is a top performing brown/red hybrid. Of all our brown egg layers, this is the lightest (about 3½ lbs. at 18 weeks and about 4½ to 5 lbs. after a year of laying), and the best feed converter, meaning it will cost you less to feed.”

One of my favourite sounds on the farm is the steady hum of our bees.

They work quietly and tirelessly, asking for nothing while giving so much in return. Beyond the honey, they pollinate the plants that feed us, support local ecosystems, and remind us how interconnected everything really is.

Watching them this evening, I was struck by how much we can learn from them. They are focused, purposeful, and part of something much bigger than themselves.

In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, there is something grounding about standing beside a hive and simply listening.

Our bees are small, but their impact is enormous.

And that's exactly why we love them.

If “Sheep, Shepherd & Land” was Anna’s love letter to Canadian wool, her second book, “The True Cost of Wool: A Vision for Revitalizing the Canadian Industry,” is her call to action for anyone who cares about ecological restoration, ethical making, and community resilience.

Anna is a Canadian shepherd, wool mill-owner, and founder of the Canadian Wool Collective. She's also a friend. In this Globe & Mail bestseller, Anna traces the journey of Canadian wool from farm to finished product, showing how fragmented infrastructure, low farm returns, and globalized supply chains have eroded the value of this renewable resource. Yet her message is one of hope: when farmers, makers, and consumers choose local, transparent, regenerative wool, they strengthen rural economies, cut carbon emissions, and reconnect craft to land.

The True Cost of Wool is a call to honour the animals, the land, and the people behind every skein, and to imagine a future where Canadian wool is once again seen for what it truly is: a resource worth cherishing.

You can buy “The True Cost of Wool” in our on-site farm store, or order your copy here. https://a.co/d/d6oYKoR It really is a fabulous read!
