It's cutting season. Since we sell a lot of our plants bare root we like to produce our own seedling when possible to ensure healthy, non girdling rootstock. These branches were stuck in our propagation houses 8 days ago and have started to sprout their first roots. They will stay in the propagation houses where the humidity is kept in the 90-99% range for another few weeks until the roots have developed enough to sustain the new top growth. We will slowly transition them out from that humidity. This winter we will harvest the cuttings and give them their first root pruning to have them ready for spring planting in may 2027.

Top dressing some peaches before getting spaced out for the summer. This mulch will help keep them w**d free during the summer and ready for fall shipping.

Getting some seed beds prepped for spring seeding. We modified our seed bed maker to attach to our rototiller but I was getting a little too much soil coming over the top. Found a quick fix and said I would fix it properly later. Who wants to bet that piece of plywood will still be there 5 years and every time I go to hook this up I say I'll fix it properly this winter.

Getting some more planting done before the rain comes again.

Enjoying the peach blooms before these head out to our customers. Our new crop is coming along nicely so get your orders in for next spring before they are all gone.

It really feels like spring when the rows get worked for the first time of the year. Bye bye winter!

We have started our spring planting. These serviceberry trees will not be ready for sales until spring 2029. Whenever we start planting season I can't help but think how long of a journey our trees go on before making their final destination. These are 2 year old seedlings, they will be grafted this summer and cut back next spring. Spend a summer growing a nice straight stem in 2027 followed by growing its branching in 2028. They will be dug up fall of 2028 for spring shipping in 2029 bare root. If we put some into pots they will be ready for our spring 2030 season. If we want to grow them into a caliper tree with a 50mm (2 inch) caliper trunk which is one of the most common street tree sizes, we would have to grow them for another 3-5 years meaning this tree might not see its final home until 2035 or later. Really makes you appreciate the saying "best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now"

Next step in our training the tree on the nursery after mowing them off is coming back and making a clean cut. These are budded trees so it's important to cut just above the bud as this bud will be our new tree. This will allow all of the tree above ground to be the species we want with the special growth habits they were selected for while having a root system that can be selected for its own growth habits and hardyness to survive our crazy Canadian climate.

With trees we grow on their own roots like native trees, cuttings or tissue culture, we will still cut them back like this as we want to grow a nice straight stem for a season to have a good foundation for our trees. There are a few species that do not like this process and will be grown on without cutting back but they are species that typically do not have as straight a stem anyways.

Follow along this season as we share our trees journey from seed to garden centre.

Undercutting some one year old trees to help with root development and reducing transplant shock. We undercut a variety of our trees to help with root development. Once root pruned these trees will start developing more fibrous root growth which helps with reducing transplant shock the following year when shipped bare root. This is done in the spring when trees are still dormant to limit shock and soil moisture is higher to help with new rooting.

And just like that the last of our fall dug trees come into the cold storage. With everything inside we have your trees ready to ship. Now if only we could warm up this weather a little.
