Quick hatch update for everyone waiting on spring birds:

Due to a series of unexpected incubator interruptions during this hatch cycle, hatch rates and chick strength were significantly below our standards this month. Because of this, we have decided to hold back and grow out this month's hatch longer before confirming placements or pickups.

At this time, we are working through all recent hatch records and updating flock tracking to ensure we accurately match birds to existing reservations in the order they were received.

Everyone currently waiting on birds will receive an individual update before the weekend regarding availability, timing, and next steps.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience while we prioritize bird quality and long-term health over rushing placements.

Thank you all for your continued support. Please keep an eye out on your emails/facebook messages in the next few days and this page next week for our availability!

~ SILVERUDD'S NAMING CONTEST UPDATE ~

I’ve made my decision for my Silverudd’s Blue breeding pen. After evaluating both birds more closely, I’ve selected Rooster #1!

At a glance, #2 drew a lot of attention and I can see why! He has strong presence and is very eye-catching.
But when selecting a breeding rooster, I’m prioritizing traits that will carry consistently into the next generation. For me, the deciding factor came down to comb quality and overall type. These are easy to overlook, but they play a strong role in maintaining consistency over time.

Both are solid birds, but #1 aligned more closely with what I’m aiming to build.

I always appreciate seeing what others are drawn to. It’s interesting how different things stand out depending on whether you’re looking as an owner or as a breeder.

Rooster #1 has a name now - Crowford! Thank you all for participating. Shania Munian Congratulations🥳

**All found homes**

Thank you all for your patience - without further ado here are our overhatch and unclaimed birds!

Please send us an email at [email protected]
We are located in Margaree Forks, Cape Breton.

ROOSTERS
- Bresse Rooster: this is Garry. He's a lovely bird, but didn't make the cut for our breeding program as we already have our two guys picked out. He is 11 months old. He is on this list to avoid the table.

CHICKS (all sold at 1 week of age to ensure viability)
- 2 Bresse
- 3 Swedish Flower
- 2 Light Sussex
- 5 Black Copper Marans
- 4 Barred Plymouth Rock
- 26 BYM: these are a mix of our just for fun hens that are with olive egger roosters. This flock has Easter Eggers, Silver Grey Dorkings, Light Sussex, Olive Eggers, Marans, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Swedish Flowers, Silverudd's Blue, Welsummers, Bresse, Ameraucana and some other fun mixes. They would be a great choice if you're looking for a rainbow basket of eggs but don't need purebreds.

PULLETS
- Maria: She's a 16 weeks old backyard mix, and one of her parents was definitely a Barred Rock!
- Stacey: This girl is also 16 weeks old. She is a mix of Light Sussex and Silver Grey Dorking (see her extra toes? That's from her Dorking mama!)
- Gloria: this 16 week old lady has all the boys looking! She's a Barred Plymouth Rock mix.
- Sandy: another 16 week old. She's a Bresse mix.
- Petunia: This 16 week old girl inherited traits from both her parents; with those extra toes and crest we know her father was our Swedish Flower and her momma was one of our Dorking hens.

Contest + Update post for the Silverudd's Blue Rooster

I went with Rooster #1.
A lot of you leaned toward #2...and I can see why. He presents well at a glance. But when I’m selecting for my breeding program, I’m prioritizing structure and correctness first, not just overall impression.

For me, #1 stood out in a few key areas:
- Comb quality: more defined and correct for type
- Overall balance: proportions are cleaner and more consistent
- Breed direction: aligns better with where I want this line to go long-term

#2 has some nice traits (and I appreciated the points about back line and hardiness), but he doesn’t fit the standard I’m aiming to lock in.

At the end of the day, breeding decisions aren’t about picking the most eye-catching bird—they’re about stacking the traits you want to see generation after generation.

Curious to see how this choice plays out with his offspring 😊

I ran a quick poll on my story last week, and most people chose Rooster #2.

I'm really curious why!

What stands out to you between the two?
Colour, comb, structure, overall presence? I'm always interested in how different traits catch people’s attention.

I’ll share my selection tomorrow 😉

~ Part 1 of our 'How We Do Things' series ~

Egg selection is where everything starts; not every egg gets set.

I collect over a 5 to 7 day period and try to use the cleanest eggs I can (mud season makes that interesting sometimes).

From there, I’m looking at size and weight. Too small and you get weaker chicks, too large and you start running into issues like double yolks, which usually don’t hatch successfully.

I also candle before setting to check shell quality and porosity.

Each egg is labeled with a breed code so I can track exactly where it came from. At this point I can recognize most hens’ eggs within a pen, and since I’ve selected the rooster, I know both sides of the pairing.
Everything gets logged so I can follow it all the way through hatch and grow-out.

That’s what lets me connect what I see later back to the decisions I’m making now.

Over the next couple weeks I’m going to walk through how everything here actually works. From egg selection through to grow-out and what gets kept vs sold.

Nothing here is done by accident. Birds are tracked, breeding groups are planned, and decisions are based on what each pen is actually producing.

If you’re new here, this will give you a good idea of how I run things. If you’ve been following along, you’ll get to see more of what goes on behind the scenes.

First post going up later today.
