Its going to be a busy year here at the Live Free Farmstead. With the cold start to this season our deck and basement are full of plant and tree starts. We also have about 100 trees and bushes in pots outside. We also have put another 30 trees and about 150 elderberry cuttings in the ground so far.

We are massively expanding our Elderberry, Currant, Serviceberry, Sea Buckthorn operation this year. We also put multiple Apple, Pear, Plumb, Walnut, and Chestnut trees in as well.

Within the next few years we will have these tree's available for sale. As well as frozen berries, fresh fruit, and nuts available.

We also hope to have alot more pictures and videos showcasing our food forest systems for all to see!

Regrettably if you are looking to buy perennial plants or trees, we strongly suggest you avoid veseys seeds.

Last year we ordered one of our mulberry trees from them that was essentially a twig that barely broke dormancy before it died. Veseys was reluctant to replace it and to their credit they did. Problem is they send another twig....

Why does this bother me you ask? Well for a quarter of the price through Oak summit nursery we got the same size tree as expected for $10. We also ordered mulberry trees for the same price through Zero Fox Tree Crops and Whiffle Tree Nursery. The tree we received from them were 3 to 5 feet tall and almost an inch thick!

So at this point we strongly recommend you go to other places for your Tree and Shrub orders. If you need recommendations, we would be happy to point you to other great companies.

We managed to get the tunnel setup with a heater. Potted up some of our elderberry cuttings and planted some herbs and lettuce.

Let's hope our first night isn't the last for these plants, but we will find out 😅

Well our first tree/cuttings order arrived today! About 50 cuttings broke dormancy in the mail and its still winter on the farm.... this is going to get interesting for sure. Today is the day we break out the diesel heater and attempt to keep the tunnel heated at night going forward!

As this last year comes to an end, and the new one comes to a start, we reflect all that we have accomplished this past year and all we hope to accomplish in the year to come.
