🐥 IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN HERE AT REAL LIVING HOMESTEAD! 🐥
The newest little residents have arrived! Our baby meat birds are here and settling into their new home on the farm. ❤️
They may be small and fluffy right now, but these little fellas have a job to do — grow up, enjoy the good life here on the farm, and eventually become part of our food supply.
Over the next couple of months, we’ll be raising them with plenty of fresh air, room to grow, and good old-fashioned farm care.
Then, sometime in October, it’ll be processing day, and these little chicks will make their final journey… from the farm to their final destination in the freezer! 😂🐔❄️
It’s not always the glamorous side of farming, but it’s an important part of what we do here at Real Living Homestead — raising our own food and knowing exactly where it came from.
Stay tuned as we watch these little fluff balls turn into some mighty fine birds!
🌱🐥 From our farm… to our freezer… and eventually to our table!

End Of Haskap Season

Well, another haskap season has come to an end, and we just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the trip out to Real Living Homestead.
Whether you came to pick berries, brought your family, shared a laugh, or simply stopped by to support our little farm, you helped make this season one we'll always remember. We feel truly blessed to be part of such a kind and supportive community.
If you run out of haskaps before next summer, don't worry—we'll have frozen berries available throughout the year while supplies last, and we'd be happy to help you out.
Thank you again for your support, your kind words, and for choosing to spend a little time with us on the farm. We wish you all a wonderful rest of the summer, a safe and healthy year ahead, and we can't wait to welcome you back next season.
From our family to yours... thank you, and God bless.

Around here at Real Living Homestead, we have a couple of very loyal customers who never miss berry season... 🫐🐦🐇
The birds arrive bright and early for breakfast, and the rabbits like to sneak in for a late-night snack. We like to call it the "Bird & Rabbit Tax." 😊
It's just part of sharing the farm with nature. We plant plenty knowing that some of the harvest belongs to the little critters who call this place home. After all, they were here long before we were!
Don't worry—there are still lots of delicious haskap berries for everyone else too. We just make sure our feathered and furry tax collectors get their fair share first!
Life on the farm wouldn't be nearly as entertaining without them. ❤️

Well, the weather app sure had me fooled today! 🌧️ It was calling for rain all day, so I figured it was the perfect time to stay inside and make pie crust.
When I make pie crust, I don't just make one or two. I make a whole batch and freeze them in little "pucks." Then, whenever the craving for a homemade pie comes along, I simply pull out a couple, let them thaw, and before long there's a fresh pie in the oven.
Wouldn't you know it... the rain never really showed up! Instead, it turned into one of those beautiful days that would've been just about perfect for picking haskap berries. 😄
But that's farm life! Around here, we've learned not to argue with Mother Nature—she usually gets the last laugh. One day you're planning for rain, the next you're wishing you'd brought your berry bucket!
No matter... the pie crust is ready, the berries are waiting, and there are plenty of homemade haskap pies in our future. 🫐🥧
Hope you're all enjoying these beautiful summer days!

Pie crust recipe is as follows:

Pie Crust Yields 2 dough balls
2½cups unbleached all-purpose flour (12½ ounces)
1teaspoon table salt
2tablespoons sugar
1½ sticks cold unsalted butter (165g)
½cup chilled solid vegetable shortening (103g)
¼cup vodka, cold
¼cup cold water
1. Step 1
Process 1½ cups flour, salt, and sugar in food processor until combined, about 2 one-second pulses. Add butter and shortening and process until homogeneous dough just starts to collect in uneven clumps, about 15 seconds (dough will resemble cottage-cheese curds, and there should be no uncoated flour). Scrape bowl with rubber spatula and redistribute dough evenly around processor blade. Add remaining cup flour and pulse until mixture is evenly distributed around bowl and mass of dough has been broken up, 4 to 6 quick pulses. Empty mixture into medium bowl.
2. Step 2
Sprinkle vodka and water over mixture. With rubber spatula, use folding motion to mix, pressing down on dough until dough is slightly tacky and sticks together. Divide dough into two even balls and flatten each into 4-inch disk. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 45 minutes or up to 2 days.

🫐 Last Chance for Fresh Haskap Berries! 🫐
The berries are at their peak, and we still have lots of beautiful haskap berries ready for picking—but they won't last much longer!
We'll be open for Pick-Your-Own Haskap Berries:
📅 Friday, July 10 • Saturday, July 11 • Sunday, July 12
This will likely be our final Pick-Your-Own weekend of the season, so if you've been planning a visit, now is the time!
🌿 Please bring your own baskets or containers to help us reuse what we already have and be kind to Mother Nature.
💧 Bring bottled water to stay hydrated, and if you have a small milk stool, you'll find it makes picking even easier.
📞 Please call or text ahead at 705-618-6484 to make sure berries are still available before heading to the farm.
