It’s game day! We have a $50 Co-op g!ft card for the person who can tell us, in our post, which community group received a $30,000 donation during Co-op Week? A g!ft card recipient will be selected at random from all the correct responses on our page at the end of the game. Only those comments posted between the starting kick-off and end of the game will qualify. As a Co-op we are a different kind of business. We are creating community by giving back. What makes Prairie North Co-op a different kind of business?

The co-operative model and seven guiding principles are fundamental to the Co-op Retail System. By staying true to our co-operative values, continuing to evolve our approach and keeping our members at the centre of every decision, we can remain resilient and capable of weathering the storms. Our commitment to members, communities and collaboration is what sets us apart.

The Seven Co-operative Principles are as followed:

1. Voluntary and open membership: Anyone can become a member at their local Co-op. FCL is owned by more than 150 independent co-operatives across Western Canada with more than two million members.

2. Democratic member control: Members actively participate in deciding new policies and decision-making.

3. Member economic participation: Members contribute financially to their co-operative, often by purchasing a share(s). FCL and local Co-ops may also share profits with our members through patronage allocations.

4. Autonomy and independence: Co-operatives have the freedom to act independently to govern themselves, control their own affairs and set their own rules of operation as determined by the membership.

5. Education, training and information: We provide education and training to members, elected representatives, managers and employees to contribute to the development of our co-operatives.

6. Co-operative among co-operatives: We source products and services from co-operatives and work with them to advance the co-operative model and grow communities here and around the world.

7. Concern for community: We ensure that we work towards sustainable development of our communities through our economic, environmental and social practices.

We were excited to announce a $30,000 donation to the Melfort Historic Post Office Advisory Group through Federated Co-op’s Community Match Fund. This investment will help restore the flooring on the building’s main level, preserving an important piece of local history and supporting its continued use by community members, groups, and businesses.
