Bruce is excellent with livestock- beef or bees- and he’s a kind and knowledgeable beef judge! Saturday he judged the local Grasslands 4-H club achievement day at the local fall fair. Impressive steers and showmanship. Well done 4-H in Merritt

4-H British Columbia

We won a couple of ribbons at Nicola Valley Fall Fair! Not going to lie. Sometimes we were the only entry and we didn’t get first place. Having been a convenor and volunteer at this fair many times in the past I totally appreciate the honest feedback!

Thank you to Purity Feed Merritt and for sponsoring the prizes for the liquid honey class. 💕💕

Ian liked our creamed honey! Heck, we like our creamed honey too!

Reading a couple of interesting books atm.
"One Hundred Years of BEEKEEPING in British Columbia 1858 - 1958" Written by W. H. Turnbull

"A History of BEEKEEPING IN British Columbia from 1950 to 2000" by Douglas M. McCutcheon

It's interesting to read about the old-time beekeepers who had up to 1000 colonies in the valley.

I am off to the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives, this winter, to hopefully find information about what happened to the equipment and colonies that were purchased by Nicola Stock Farm in the 1930's.
I don't think I've ever seen anything about Nicola having bees in the past

Buying local? Buying Canadian honey? Do you know local commercial honey users who could be encouraged to buy local Canadian honey , if they aren’t already?

So much to get finished up before tomorrow’s Nicola Valley Farmers Market, will you be down to support local producers?

We anticipated a light nectar flow in our area because of the predicted drought. So we experimented with a few 2 queen colonies. It took a couple of different configurations as we’d had no past experience.

The 4 boxes above the escape board bring the total to 8 pulled with 2 more that Bruce is making them fully cap.

Side note, we are in a pretty serious drought but the honey crop has been pretty good in most yards. 🤷‍♀️

Bruce and I were able to get a pass to check on our house this morning, so we’re taking the opportunity to do that.

The interesting thing about being beekeepers is that it doesn’t matter what else you’ve got going on you still have to go with the flow of the bees. So today we built a cell builder, released a breeder queen, graft in 2 days. We pulled honey because that’s our living, Bruce’s full time job.

Added to this we are back to living in our daughter’s trailer in her driveway because the powers that be, whoever they might 🐝, say today is the day the fire reaches our area.
But do you know what I’m thinking about? I wonder where my wax melter is? Where did it end up?
Lower Nicola Garlic Festival is a month away and I’m not ready, lol. I might need therapy 🤯

Evacuation order lifted! Bruce and I headed to the nuc yards after work to have a look. Out of control! There’s some beautiful queens in these colonies. Stuffed to the max. Wish we’d put honey boxes on them when we evacuated them, but we just couldn’t fit that task in too
