Forty years ago, I was given my first sheep for Christmas. Eight years ago, I should have died. Both changed everything.

Growing up in the suburbs of Toronto, Scarborough to be precise… it was highly unlikely that I would become a sheep owner at the age of 12. In 1985, my sister gave me the best Christmas present ever. The gift that keeps on giving – 40 years later – my very first ewe, Georgian. 🐑

Although I lived 3 hours away, I would take the bus any chance I could get - all holidays and the entire summer. My sister marveled at how I could go away for sometimes months at a time and go out to the flock of hundreds of sheep and call, “Georgie,” and she would push through the pack to greet me.

What started out supposed to be a “nice pet” for me turned out to be my life’s passion. I convinced my sister and her husband that I should be able to keep the first born female at least. Then, one a year would be fair, I thought. Although Georgian passed away the year before I was old enough to farm on my own, I brought 5 of her descendants to live with me in 1995.

From there the flock grew to 100 ewes. Over the years, I had decreased numbers to 35 to increase the rare breed Red Poll cattle I had imported in 2017.

April 12th, 2018, started out a day like any other – and was almost my last. While hauling a hay wagon with my young son, Clayton in our pickup truck – a car speeding at 80 km/hr came 100% in our lane and hit us head on. The injuries I sustained were fatal – but I didn’t die.

With a double break in my C2 vertebrae, brain injury and other problems – I lost most everything. My independence, my marriage, my farm, most of my animals and even became homeless with my son by 2021. It was living in survival mode at its best. But through it all, I somehow managed to keep the sheep – not a lot of them, but at the lowest count 6. I could not bear to lose that which I had worked my whole life for.

In 2023, Clayton and I moved to Nova Scotia for a fresh new start. It is here that I made the most strides in my ongoing recovery. Although I deal with chronic pain and brain issues every day – they are invisible to the people around me – and I am working towards a day when they will be invisible to me too.

I spent more than the last seven years trying to figure out what I am supposed to do with my life if I wasn’t able to be farming anymore – till I realized that it is all I have ever wanted to do, and I AM doing it. I have held Georgian’s line continuously for 40 years – through it all. This anniversary deserved an expansion, not just of the sheep but with our new online shop: Sacred Eagle - The Shop. The shop will be in honour of our animals – past, present and future.

Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom is taking a pause for March.

We’re using this time to thoughtfully reshape the gathering so it works well for everyone involved.

We look forward to reconvening in April with a refreshed format.

❄️ 🌨 ☃️ Well, the snow was no match for our friend and neighbour Paul Higgins who kindly made us a parking lot for our Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom painting gathering coming up on Saturday!

I do love the snow ❄️ but might not so much if I didn't have such wonderful neighbours who make sure we are taken care of in it!

Looking forward to learning about Acrylic Painting with an amazing group of people!

We are so grateful to all who pre-registered for this event!

For those who are attending and know what you are bringing for potluck... some have told me directly but I thought better yet, you can tell each other so everyone knows! Feel free to write in the comments what you will be bringing for the potluck so that others can coordinate if they choose. There will be fifteen eaters in case that matters to your planning!

With all the snow – parking will be a bit more interesting than usual. We can fit all the cars in the front driveway but please carpool if you are able to. The catch is that you’ll have to leave in the order that you come in, or move your vehicle at the end if you are blocking someone else in. I think it is all doable but if you think you have to leave early, please try to park close to the road so as to avoid a lot of shuffling.

The instructions for the painting will begin promptly at 11:15 AM.

Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom — February Gathering 🎨

Our next gathering is Saturday, February 14, starting at 11:00 AM.

Theme:
Acrylic Painting Gathering
Sunset Silhouette

Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom is a collective learning group where everyone is both teacher and student. One person will gently guide the activity, but this is not a class or workshop — it is a shared experience.

We will start the painting together at 11:00, working through the first steps of the sunset background.

We’ll then set the paintings aside to dry and enjoy a shared potluck lunch.

After lunch, we’ll return to the paintings to complete them.

Even if painting isn’t really your thing, you are welcome to come for the connection and community.

What to bring for painting (all available at Dollarama):

• Canvas or canvas board (9×12 recommended)

• Acrylic paints: yellow, orange, red or pink, blue or purple, black, white

• 1 medium brush

• 1 small brush

• Paper plate or palette

• Cup or jar for rinsing brushes

• Paper towel or rag

If supplies are an issue, please let us know — we likely have extras.

Don’t let lack of supplies be the reason you can’t come.

Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom Events🐮

We met again this past Saturday — a gathering of curious, open-minded, free-thinking people, where everyone is both teacher and student. This month’s theme was “Everything Cows”, and we also started planning our year ahead. 🐮

Half the group arrived early for a milking demonstration — seeing how a simple milking machine works, asking questions, and imagining future milk cows. 🐄

At 11 AM, everyone (ages 11 and up) came together for wide-ranging conversations and another delicious potluck. Five hours slipped by without notice! 🍽️🍝🍛

What This Is:

There’s no cost to attend. People come for connection, fellowship, and practical skills — and many have said the relationships matter more than the theme itself.

Winter events have limited space, so pre-registration is required. Event details will be shared through the Sacred Harvest and Sacred Eagle Farm pages (not public posts). If you think you might like to join, reach out to us!

Each month, someone shares knowledge or a skill, but anyone can contribute. Sometimes you bring supplies for an activity; other times, one person provides materials and participants reimburse them — another reason pre-registration is important.

😊 Thank you to everyone who came to our last Sacred Journey to a Harvest of Wisdom gathering on December 13th — a winter sowing session, potluck, and seed swap. Fourteen of us gathered, and although it was planned as a three-hour event, no one even began to leave until four hours had passed, with some staying closer to five, simply because the conversation and time together kept flowing.

Since then, we’ve been talking with participants about keeping these gatherings going as a monthly, relaxed space centered on shared food, connection, and open, respectful conversation without having to self-censor, with opportunities to learn through listening, sharing, and hands-on experience.

Here are some of the interests and ideas people shared that they’d enjoy exploring together over time:

🌿 herbs and plant knowledge, including uses, tinctures, and practical applications

🪴 gardening and growing food

🍞 food skills like baking, fermentation, preserving, smoking, and nutrition

🐮 animals and homesteading, including sheep, and dairy cows — milking, milk handling, and making things like 🧈 butter or cheese — as well as rabbits, butchering and general animal care

🕯 handcrafts and making, such as spinning, sewing, knitting, tanning, candle making, and creative arts like painting

⭐️ learning through lived experience, observation, and shared curiosity

Some gatherings may naturally include hands-on elements, demonstrations, or longer sharing when it fits. Other times it may be more about conversation and connection. We’re intentionally keeping the format flexible and letting the group shape what happens.

We have lots of great ideas on the table, and for January 10th we’ll be choosing one main focus, with an eye toward planning the next gatherings as well.
