I feel like they are conspiring something...

Houdini is our rooster we rescued from the dump last year. Yes, he was dumped at the dump. He's been living his life happily here since.

Another reason rooster rescues are needed.

Hmmmm...2027 foal? She was bred twice but came in heat after the first. No heat since the second time in July. Too early to show, but she has dropped some weight which she did with Posie too. Time will tell.

For 4 years we have rescued and taken in roosters so they had a chance at life versus the pot.

We've rehomed dozens. Kept some for our free range flock and sadly lost some to foxes. We've done this voluntarily and spent thousands on feed and shelters for them.

People appreciate it, there's a need for it, and we have the space for them. It's been wonderful seeing so many beautiful roosters come through here over the years.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Due to complaints of roosters crowing, from a neighbor, we will not longer be able to rescue or adopt from this point forward.

Are we legally able to keep them?
Yes.
Do we have enough land for them?
Yes. 23 Acres.
Are they being cared for?
Yes. Very well.
Do they only crow during the day?
Yes. During daylight hours.
Are we the only ones with roosters in the vicinity?
No. There are a few other neighbors with roosters.

There is no reason we can't have roosters in an agricultural area. Agricultural noise is part of living in this area. We hear tractors, excavators, chainsaws, cows, horses, chickens, dogs and many other animals daily. It comes with the area. Does it bother us and most others? No.

However, we do try our best to be good neighbors and live by a "what you do on your own property is your business, not ours" mentality. When our livelihood and hobbies are a cause for complaint, we want to do what we can to lessen the tension.

So going forward, we will be looking to immediately rehome no less than 10 of our roosters. We will appreciate any help we can get from the community through shares and adoptions. As much as we prefer them to go to good homes, we are not in a position to be picky and they will need to go, no questions asked.

I hate that it comes to this. But I have to do my best to be accommodating without completely giving up my livelihood.

Our roosters consist of bantams, standards and purebreeds. From 4 months to 3 years old.

Long overdue update!

Biggest of apologies. We've had more issues from a certain neighbor and it's been difficult to get anything extra accomplished while trying to accommodate them to keep the peace.

Meanwhile, we've had regular vet visits for Posie once a week. She's had 3 different minor surgeries to remove proud flesh with that last one being complete sedation.

Her top wound that was of biggest concern has nearly completely healed. The lower part above the fetlock joint has been difficult to deal with. Multiple creams, honey and solutions. Applied daily. There is alot of scar tissue from dead flesh where the wire cut off circulation for too long.

We are currently applying a topical wound cream that carries a bit of heat to the swollen scar tissue area in hopes to encourage healing.

She gets out every day. She has the sillies and can zoomie cautiously but still favors her leg as the swelling and scar tissue is on her joint.

We are nearing 2 months since her injury and the process is definitely slow. We want her to be comfortable, happy and be a foal as much as she can. She is nearing 6 months old and we do not plan on weaning her yet. Serenity has been a big support for her as she goes through the pain, stress and fear of constant procedures and treatments. Until those are fewer between, she will have her mama by her side.

The unfortunate bonus is that she is incredibly well halter trained, very good with being handled, has had alot of exposure and is a pro at leading and haltering. This girl has incredible patience, resilience and heart.

Healing is slow, but getting better each day. Yesterday was rough. Vet was out to cut off some of the proud flesh that is coming in. It was messy, but had to come off. Only half was done today, more in a couple of weeks if it doesn't go away. Photo is from today. More photos in comments as they are quite messy.

She's walking well. Still on stall rest but gets out for light excercise. So happy to see this improvement!

Posie update. Week 3.

Sorry it's been a while since an update. Between work, kids, animals and vet visits it doesn't leave much time for updates. Bit of good and bad news.

Good news: She's putting weight on her leg and not buckling it like she was. The smaller torn tendon has adhered to another and is healing. The partially torn flexor tendon still needs the support of a bandage to keep it from tearing further until it has healed. She's even trotted normally for a few steps so that's good! Shes still on stall rest (and Serenity is not a fan of it) until it heals because she will want to have zoomies. The area with exposed bone has completely covered over and healing well.

Bad news: Due to the severity of the cuts on her leg, there is alot of exposed flesh, dead skin and bleeding. This is not the area with the deepest cut to the bone originally, but the lower end where the wire was wrapped around her leg. Circulation had been cut for long enough to cause tissue to die even though there were no cuts through the skin. It's dying. It's a mess. It's not pretty. So we are definitely concerned. Our vet had given us 2 different creams and ointments for each area and we cover it with several bandages. One ointment has penicillin in it.

Our vet is still hopeful for a full recovery, but unfortunately her leg will be scarred for life and she will need ALOT of care for the next few weeks.

We aren't out of the woods. There is still alot at stake. Alot of vet care, alot of bandages, wraps and non stick guaze to buy. And always the possibility of returning to PEI if need be. I'm posting photos from each of our bandage changes in the comments as they are graphic.
