Ants and Grasshoppers is a weekly produce delivery service based out of Nictaux, Nova Scotia. We strive to heal the land, build strong community relationships and bring good food to the city.
The Wednesday evening vegetable pick-ups and drop-offs include:
I’m planting from seeds passed down, generation to generation (Heirloom varieties from Annapolis Seeds, a seed-saving company also located on this property) and using organic, no-spray methods to farm. All produce and goods in the CSA box (Community Supported Agriculture) are grown from healthy, natural soil in the Annapolis Valley supplemented by organic compost and peat. Heartseed farm, the site of my farming operation maintains a healthy Acadian old growth forest through responsible forestry practices. I hope that this project can serve as a model for sustainable agriculture and leave the land even more fertile. I try to offer educational and cultural contributions for those subscribed to the CSA. A newsletter with weekly updates, curiosities and descriptions of goods included in the delivery box helps to further a connection between farmer and CSA member. Field trips, events and workshops will be made available to those who have the time and inclination to get on board. I’m a city-slicker who’s been working to connect my community in Halifax to good food for the last 10 years. I’ve done this by starting up food co-ops and gardens, challenging corporate food monopolies at Dalhousie and King’s College, creating ethical and locally sourced businesses and even biking around the city delivering burritos and propaganda for good causes. In 2017 I started this CSA delivery box. In some ways this was a return to form, as I first studied permaculture and became a certified Permaculture Designer at the beginning of my food journey 10 years ago. I have been getting my hands dirty ever since on friends' farms and through community agriculture projects. I want to bring abundance to my friends, family and community through food. This CSA is an endeavor, not aimed at profit, but instead at both subsistence and Food Sovereignty. Food sovereignty is described as “the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods”. I enjoy getting to know old friends and meet new ones by curating this weekly vegetable box. Let’s overcome this exploitative and alienating food system so that we can get to the task of creating real prosperity together. Looking forward to the journey with you,
