Please consider contacting your local MP and MPP and Senators about the proposed high speed train that will be cutting through prime Farmland, the Oakridges Moraine and other ecologically sensitive wetlands and forests. Here is a letter we recently wrote regarding bill C-15, which is scheduled to be considered by the Senate this week:

We are farmers in the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes Region, located just west of Millbrook on county road 21. I have extended family which has been in Kawartha Lakes for generations. Our family farm and organic fruit orchard is on Oakridges Moraine Greenbelt designated land - near the Ganaraska forest. We produce everything from Haskaps, to Asian pears, Raspberries, Strawberries, currants, apples, maple syrup, and much more market garden produce. It has taken us decades as wards of this land to plant, grow and produce this kind of product, and to actually begin to reap the benefits of our hard labour. But it has been a labour of love.

Our family of 5 relies on permaculture fruit trees and bushes for our livelihood. This is our home. We feed our local communities. We also operate a u-pick for Certified Organic Haskaps. We cannot simply pick up our trees and bushes and start again on other land. It takes years to establish an orchard.

Our lives and livelihood would be devastated by the proposed high speed train running through or adjacent to our property. We are strongly opposed to this project, for many reasons, beyond our own potential personal and financial losses:

A) Cost: the excessive costs would far outweigh any benefit to our region - there are so many more pressing needs for folks these days, affordable food, access to Healthcare, affordable housing. Depending on whose estimate, this project is estimated to cost between 90 and 160 Billion dollars. This cost doesn't include the cost of local infrastructure to support the plan: for instance, it is estimated that the amount of hydro necessary to support the line would require another power plant to be opened. Furthermore, the vast majority of people in the rural communities being transected by this project would never be able to afford to use it. Peterborough and area simply does not have the population to make this costly boondoggle an economically viable project.

B)This train will not be stopping in the local rural farming communities that it will devastate by partitioning and seizing by the state. We are losing prime farmland in this province at an exponential rate due to an abject lack of long term urban planning/urban and suburban sprawl. Who is going to feed the cities you are trying to support with this infrastructure? The USA? Because Ontario doesn't have a significant amount of great soil, nor warmer growing zones, outside of southern Ontario.

C) The consultation process and information available to local residents has been sorely lacking. Not one notice about the possibility of land expropriation was received from either federal or provincial representatives in our riding. We learned about the project only recently, and only through social media. Farmland is NOT even an option to be noted with a Pin on the Alto Map! (Recreational uses are - how is this more important than a family Farm?)

D) Environmental impact and alternative strategies: there has been an abject lack of public assessment about the impacts of dissecting potentially sensitive ecological zones like the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the forests, wetlands and farms that operate within these boundaries. We were not notified before the public consultation came through our area, that it was even here. While public transit is an important consideration, due care and attention must be given to alternatives that utilize and upgrade existing train corridors, or even hydro allowances, and not simply tear through existing farmland, communities, and green spaces.

Finally, why is there no option to mark Farmland as a Pin on the Alto Map? I can only assume is is because the developers of Alto intentionally did not want the public to see or know the extent of prime Farmland we will be losing to this project which will cripple the ability of those in the communities through which is passes to financially survive. If this omission was not intentional, it was negligent.

There is widespread anger and discontent in our region about how this project has been proposed and is proceeding so far.

Please insure that our concerns and perspective are conveyed in the Senate Hearing. We look forward to your meaningful response. https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Sign/e-7203
