our may session was raining and cold but the kiddos braved the storm to hang out in our Slovenian bee cabin and complete a hive inspection with Dave.

back at the barn, we kept warm with TWO guest speakers.

Dr Susan Chan chatted squash bees with the kiddos and we explored pollination, dissecting tulips to learn all about plant biology.

Joanna Paul shared her work with - teaching the kiddos all about fireflyโ€™s, butterflies, and many other pollinating insects. complete with an interactive puppet show & a hands on pollinator DIY.

the beeks were shouting with joy after this session!

sharing a focus not only on honeybees but all pollinating species is so near & dear to our hearts. itโ€™s about so much more than honeybees!

thank you so much to our guests for a session we wonโ€™t forget ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿฆ‹

the Io moth ๐Ÿฆ‹

โ€œeye-ohโ€ - a North American moth named after Io, the mortal lover of Zeus. they can be found from Costa Rica right up through Quebec.

we found a male resting atop a window sill at the farm. the Io moth releases a very painful venom when touched that can cause acute dermatitis in humans, and male and female Io moths use their hindwing eyespots to deter predators.

one of the many reasons we delay mowing till June to allow all sorts of biodiversity to nest & hatch in leaf litter, leaves and shallow crevices around the farm. these moths like maple, dogwood, willow, redbud, indigo, and lots of other host plants we nurture here ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฆ‹

although theyโ€™re common to southern Ontario, this is our first sighting on our farm.

what moths have you spotted this spring? ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฆ‹

a queen bee, surrounded by her attendants โœจ๐Ÿ‘‘

swipe to see her eggs up close - from freshly laid yesterday on the left to 3-6 day old larva toward the right of the frame.

this is a new colony with a robust queen, and you can also see the worker bees are barely making honeycomb fast enough to keep up with her. the wax tapering off towards the left of the frame as theyโ€™re building it up. she is laying in cells barely 1/4 of their final thickness and the architects are building that wax up around the eggs and larva. the cell gets sealed off with a beeswax โ€œlidโ€ to allow the larva to develop to a pupa before hatching out as a baby bee.

the entire process from egg to hatched honeybee is 21 days ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ

did you know carries our honey? add some honey into your next tea or latte โ˜•๏ธ

the Peddler is our favorite stop to treat the crew, to fuel up before a big event, to fuel up after a hike @ the Millbrook Trails, to fuel up after playgroup, basically, itโ€™s our spot to fuel up period!

junie has quite literally grown up in that window booth, reading her favourite bird books, snacking on cookies, catching up with friends and chatting up Jen & the crew.

if you ever visit the farm for a tour we always recommend a stop here on your way home ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿค

the beek & his honeybees ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ

we didnโ€™t trick or treat this year, as Halloween holds some heavy memories and emotions. we let junie dress up (because hello; sheโ€™s literally a honeybee), and stayed in and got crafty. which was just what the soul needed ๐Ÿ‘ป
