Elliott's Sugar Bush

Elliott's Sugar Bush We produce and sell maple syrup The farm was purchased in 1873. From the very beginning maple trees on the farm were tapped for their sap to make syrup.

Elliott's Sugar Bush has been in operation for five generations on the farm in Mindemoya, Ontario on beautiful Manitoulin Island. From buckets to the present day sap lines this is a much loved process done by the Elliott families through the years in order to make their wonderful tasting syrup. In the early days on the farm the sap was boiled in cast iron pots over an open pit. Presently we use a

stainless steel evaporator to process our sap into our final maple syrup. With this method we can make several batches in a day. Wood is still used to boil the sap into maple syrup. Every syrup producer must contend with Mother Nature as to whether or not they will have a productive year. One of the old sayings passed down through the generations is “Large bag of sugar, small loaf of bread” meaning if you have a good crop of maple syrup you would generally have a poor crop of wheat. So enjoy our wonderful syrup provided by our bountiful maple trees and Mother Nature.

As per my husband we are all tapped in, now mother nature needs to cooperate. We repaired sap lines for 2 days, and took us 1.5 days to tap, still making repairs while tapping. Monday we could walk on top of the snow/ice, Tuesday we needed the snow shoes, did not freeze overnight. Hopefully the sap will start flowing soon. Fingers crossed.

Lloyd and Glenn were finally able to get in to tap the trees. As he said 600 taps in of the 1,000 we put in. They are hoping to finish tomorrow. The dog, Finnegan, also enjoyed being in the bush with them. I think they will all sleep well tonight.

What crazy weather over the last few days, snow, rain, freezing rain, thunder and now snow again. Trees look lovely but the weight of the freezing rain/ice has broken a few branches. Hopefully our sugar bush does not have too much damage. Have not been able to get in to the bush to tap any trees yet as it is too dangerous with the freezing on the tree branches. Here are some of the trees near the farm house so not safe yet hopefully maybe we will get in next week if Mother Nature cooperates.
