We are SO excited to be bringing Danique Henderson back to Oldfield Acres in September 2026!

This is a groundwork clinic, because all of the important things with horses begin on the ground. Working with Danique has shaped who I've become as a horse person, and she is always a favorite to have at the barn.

If you'd like to register for this clinic, please message me or the Oldfield Acres page directly to reserve a spot!

We've had a lot of interest in our upcoming Helen Smith clinic so are planning to bring her back in March!

Helen Smith is a Western Competition Coach Specialist, Master Coach Developer, and judge. She specializes in reining and general performance horses. Showing herself since age three, Helen has won numerous high points, buckles, APHA ROM’s, and NRHA Bronzes and money earned. The majority of horses Helen has shown were raised and trained by her. Her students have successfully shown across multiple divisions, earning many high points and provincial championship awards in events ranging from Showmanship to Trail to Horsemanship to Hunter Under Saddle.
Helen believes in building a slow and steady foundation for both horses and riders, and loves working with all riders no matter their goals from recreational to competitive. Her goal is to have people become better horsemen/horsewomen, and understand the reasoning behind why training exercises and methods are used and how to apply them in different situations.

At Oldfield Acres, wrapped in snow,
The winter moon shines soft and low.
The barns hum warm with gentle cheer—
It’s Christmas time, the best of year.

Axle stands steady, old and true,
The faithful heart that’s seen it through.
Beside him Walker watches all,
Too smart by far for any stall.

Sweet Honey nickers, calm and kind,
With mild-mannered grace and peaceful mind.
Kolt the pony plots his schemes,
Mischief dancing in his dreams.

Princess steps like a lady born,
Elegant even on Christmas morn.
Young Sugar prances, learning fast,
While Chief’s up to something—unsurpassed.

And Fiera, newest of the crew,
Finds her place as families do.
New hoofprints join the well-worn trail,
Another story in the stable tale.

Rigsby circles, sharp and proud,
Keeping order, barking loud.
Three barn cats rule with silent sway—
Curled up sleeping on their hay.

Sean and Amanda light the way,
With work-worn hands and hearts that stay.
And little Wyatt, laughter bright,
Turns every chore to pure delight.

So here’s to hay and hooves and cheer,
To furry friends we hold so dear.
From Oldfield Acres, to all of you —
Merry Christmas! And a Happy New Year too! 🎄🐾

We have 1-2 spaces available in our lesson program for youth riders who are already familiar with the basics of grooming, tacking, and know how to steer at a walk and jog. These riders will be joining existing lesson groups so we are looking for the right fit for the specific spots that are available. We may also have a slightly more advanced youth spot opening up as well.

Please send our page a message if interested.

Clinic Announcement!

Who is ready for our most sought after clinic of the series?! Helen Smith is coming back to the Napan Agricultural Fair Grounds on June 27th-29th, 2025 – this is always our biggest (and most requested) event of the year! This 2.5 day western horsemanship/ranch riding/reining clinic will start Friday evening and run until Sunday with two components: two small group lessons (Saturday & Sunday) and two large group (all participant) mock show rides. The large group rides will be a ‘mock show’ environment – warmup ring, pattern practice, a cheering crowd, and feedback from a Western Competition Coach Specialist, Master Coach Developer and Judge who specializes in reining and general performance horses. Get real-time feedback to improve your runs as you kick off show season!

DATES: Friday June 27th (start time 6pm) – Sunday, June 29th, 2024
LOCATION: Napan Agricultural Fair Grounds
COST: $300 + Stall fee (non-refundable $150 deposit required to reserve your space)

**Breaking News: Zebras Now Eligible to Compete in All FEI Disciplines!**

In a groundbreaking move towards inclusivity, the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) has announced a major rule change that will allow zebras to compete alongside horses in all FEI disciplines.

A spokeswoman for the FEI, Avril Mirth, stated, "In today’s inclusive society, it is vital that no animal capable of being ridden should feel excluded. Zebras have long been overlooked in equestrian sport, and we are excited to welcome them into the competitive arena."

However, the FEI acknowledges that there are anatomical differences between zebras and traditional sport horses. Special considerations will be made, particularly regarding tack and judging criteria.

**New Bridles and Bits for Zebras**

Due to the unique conformation of the zebra’s head, neck, and mouth, new rules will be implemented to accommodate their distinct physiology. Although zebras will compete in the same classes as horses, judges will be trained to accept a slightly shorter, higher, and less round frame. The standard dressage outline, for example, may look different on a zebra, but that will not be penalised under the new regulations.

One of the most significant adaptations will be in the design of bridles and bits. Renowned bit and bridle expert, Charlotte Warman has taken on the challenge of developing specialised tack to ensure the comfort and welfare of zebras in competition.

**A More Sensitive Mouth**

"The mouth of a zebra is incredibly sensitive due to... well, let’s just say centuries of not being selectively bred for riding!" Warman explained. "This means they require a much lighter contact than horses. Riders will need to develop a softer feel and refine their aids to accommodate the zebra’s unique needs."

Warman is currently testing prototype bridles that feature extra-padded nosebands and ergonomic bit designs tailored to the zebra’s delicate oral structures. "We’re also looking into bitless options," she added, "as many zebras seem to prefer a more natural approach."

**Challenges and Opportunities**

While this historic rule change has been met with enthusiasm, there are logistical challenges. Unlike horses, zebras have a reputation for being independent thinkers with a penchant for unpredictability. However, supporters argue that with the right training and handling, zebras could become serious contenders in international competition.

"Imagine watching a beautifully striped dressage test or a zebra clearing a showjumping course with ease!" Mirth exclaimed. "The possibilities are endless."

As of April 2025, riders interested in competing with zebras can begin the registration process. Stay tuned for further updates as this exciting new chapter in equestrian sport unfolds!
