Built by Hand, Cooked from the Heart: Nomadi Soho Is Moncton's Newest Must-
Try
Let's get one thing out of the way: I had never been served dinner inside a piece of fruit. Then I went to Nomadi Social House.
Before we talk food, you need to know the story. Owners David and Somto followed a dream.
They dropped everything and opened Nomadi the first week of October. Every recipe on the menu is theirs, and they painted those walls themselves. This is one of those spots that warms
your heart, because you can feel two people pouring everything they have into something
special.
That something special travels, too. The menu takes familiar African flavours and gives them a fresh twist: teriyaki wings, shawarma, Rasta Pasta, and beef gyoza served in pepper soup. The
soup section is even called "Pho or Not?", which might be the best menu pun in Moncton.
The heart of the menu is Nigerian, though, and that's where you should start:
● Lagos Party Combo Bowl: jollof rice and fried rice with plantain, for those of us who
can't decide.
● Nigerian Gizdodo: chicken gizzards and plantain sautéed in bell peppers. Be brave.
● Suya Platter: spiced beef, chicken, gizzard and liver with plantain, fries and slaw.
● Plain Sun Kissed Orbs: golden fried dough. Think of them as Timbits' cooler, well-
travelled cousin.
Here's what I ordered:
Prawn & Mayo Spring Rolls: Crispy, golden and stuffed with shrimp. They were gone faster
than a downtown parking spot on a Saturday.
Senegalese Beef Tek: Beef and plantain sautéed in bell peppers. I kept going back for "one more
bite" long after announcing I was full.
Coastal Lobster Boil: Lobster, shrimp, crab legs, corn and potatoes in their
signature sauce. An African restaurant doing a Maritime lobster boil? Very Moncton. Grab extra napkins.
Island Rice: The showstopper. It's pineapple fried rice with shrimp, served inside a pineapple. Half the restaurant turned to look when it hit the table.
Places like this are why I love doing what I do. David and Somto bet everything on this dream, and new restaurants need us most in those first few months. Go hungry, bring friends, and order
the pineapple.
