It's a common pattern: someone buys or builds a w**e display sized for the collection they have, and a few years later that same display is quietly straining to hold what's grown around it. Extra bottles end up on a counter, a closet shelf, wherever there's room, because the original system was never meant to scale.
That's not a sign anything went wrong. It's a sign the collection is doing what collections do. The fix is usually less dramatic than people expect.

People often ask which collection they need, Millesime or GrandCellar, when the honest answer is usually both (aka. GrandMillesime, just in different proportions. It's Port W**e Day, and Port is a good example of something a lot of new collectors don't think about until they own a few bottles of it: not every w**e in a cellar wants the same environment. Fortified w**es like Port often call for different handling than the table w**es surrounding them, and a display built around one set of conditions can end up asking those bottles to compromise.

This is part of why a considered w**e wall usually isn't one uniform zone. It's a few, each doing a slightly different job.

Ask most restaurants how many bottles their display holds and they'll usually give you a rough number based on what fits comfortably right now. Ask them how many it'll need to hold in three years, and the answer gets a lot less certain.

That gap is where most cellar and wall projects run into trouble later, not because the system was wrong, but because it was sized for today's collection instead of the one that's still growing. Harvest season, when new bottles are about to start arriving, is a good moment to actually run that math before it becomes urgent.

Under-the-stairs space is almost always awkward: angled ceiling, tight footprint, easy to write off as storage-closet territory. This project treated it as the opposite, a glass-enclosed cellar built around Millesime racking that holds 224 bottles flat and another 60 angled for label visibility, turning a triangular dead zone into one of the more considered features in the house.

Cab is the backbone of more home cellars in North America than any other red, which creates a specific design problem: most of a serious Cab collection isn't meant to be looked at every day. It's meant to sit quietly and age.
