💜 5 Secrets to Growing Beautiful Lavender at Home!
Dreaming of having your own beautiful, fragrant lavender plants? Here’s what we’ve learned from growing lavender right here on our Ontario farm!
☀️ 1. SUNSHINE IS EVERYTHING!
Lavender LOVES the sun! Choose a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
🌱 2. GOOD DRAINAGE IS A MUST!
Lavender hates having wet feet! Plant in well-drained soil and avoid areas where water collects. Sandy or gravelly soil is ideal!
💧 3. DON’T OVERWATER!
Once established, lavender is drought-tolerant. Water young plants regularly while their roots develop, but allow the soil to dry between waterings.
✂️ 4. PRUNING IS THE SECRET!
Prune your lavender yearly to encourage bushy, healthy growth. Avoid cutting into old, woody stems that have no green growth.
❄️ 5. CHOOSE THE RIGHT VARIETY!
Here in Ontario, our winters can be harsh! Cold-hardy English lavender varieties, such as Munstead and Hidcote, are great choices. Good drainage is especially important for winter survival!

💜 BONUS TIP: Lavender doesn’t need rich soil or lots of fertilizer. In fact, too much fertilizer can encourage leafy growth instead of those beautiful, fragrant blooms!
Growing lavender takes a little patience, but the reward is SO worth it! 🌸
