Farming mushrooms is a little different than what we usually imagine as farming. Mushrooms are fungi; neither plant, nor animal – but sharing characteristics of both. A mushroom farmer grows microscopic spores (similar to plant seeds, but smaller), into big, delicious fruit bodies. His job starts in the laboratory. A mushroom farmer must protect the vulnerable spores from both bacteria and other contaminants for the duration of their growth cycle. As such, sterile conditions are imperative to protect the baby fungus. Only when the spores have colonized petri dishes, and then a jar of grain, can they be allowed to make contact with the regular air we breathe.

Mount Forest Mushrooms are an organic mushroom farm. This means we do not use any anti-bacterial or anti-fungal agents in protecting our baby fungus. In the rare case a batch of our growth are contaminated, we let the batch expire and wish it well in the mushroom afterlife. Additionally, all intermediate growth media we use are also organicly sourced. The grain we use to expand our colonies are 100% organic. In this way, we ensure that that the entire lifecycle of our fungus friends does not encounter any man made pesticides or other chemical agents not found in nature.
