New to the Market

We’re very excited to introduce a little Japanese goodness to the shelves at Old City Cheese & Market!

Organic Traditional Miso — handcrafted in small batches right here in Nanaimo using organic Canadian soy, organic rice, Himalayan pink salt and traditional koji culture. Aged for a minimum of 12 months, this is the real deal — rich, savoury and packed with that deep umami flavour we love. 🇯🇵

Miso is so much more than soup! Stir it into sauces and dressings, add it to marinades, whisk it into butter, or use a little to give vegetables, noodles, broths and pretty much anything savoury an extra layer of flavour.

And coming in a couple of weeks… 👀

Organic Shio Koji — a Japanese fermented seasoning with serious umami power. We’ll have it as soon as it arrives!

Come grab a jar of miso and get your fermentation game on. 🍜

Meet Milhafre:

Sometimes the best cheeses come from places you’ve never thought to look.

Made on Terceira Island in Portugal’s Azores, Milhafre is a traditional cow’s milk cheese that reflects the lush volcanic pastures and generations of island cheesemaking. Formerly known as Castelhinos, this semi-soft beauty is smooth, buttery, and wonderfully approachable.

Expect a delicate creaminess with subtle savoury notes and a clean, lingering finish that keeps you coming back for “just one more slice.”

If you’re looking to explore beyond the familiar, Milhafre is a delicious place to start.

Come discover a little taste of the Azores. 🇵🇹🧀

🇮🇹 Today’s Cheese Feature: La Tur

Some cheeses are good. Others are unforgettable.

From the rolling hills of Piedmont, Italy, La Tur is a luxurious soft-ripened cheese crafted from an uncommon blend of cow’s, goat’s, and sheep’s milk. Each milk brings something special—the buttery richness of cow’s milk, the bright tang of goat’s milk, and the delicate sweetness and depth of sheep’s milk.

The result is an impossibly creamy cheese with notes of fresh butter, cultured cream, and warm bread dough, balanced by a gentle acidity and a silky, lingering finish.

A true expression of the Alta Langa cheesemaking tradition, La Tur is equally at home on a cheeseboard or enjoyed with a spoon and a crusty baguette.

Trust us… this is one you’ll be thinking about long after the last bite. 🇮🇹🧀

🍺🧀 Friday Night Feature: Drunk Monk

Meet the monk who’s had one too many…

Hailing from Belgium, Drunk Monk is a washed-rind cow’s milk cheese that’s lovingly bathed in beer as it matures. The result? An irresistibly fudgy texture, aromas of fresh bread and yeast, and a gentle Cascade hop bitterness near the rind that melts into a rich, sweet cream finish.

Bold enough for washed-rind enthusiasts, yet surprisingly approachable for the cheese-curious.

Pair it with a Belgian ale, your favourite craft beer, or a crisp cider, and let Friday night begin. 🍻
