We have had terrible drought conditions over the past 3 growing seasons and the deer have been eating our foliage by early August due to lack of anything to eat. I have found an interesting article on-line which I will share with you that you might find useful!!
MUSTARD POWDER IS A GARDENER'S BET FRIEND - HERE IS WHY.....
NATURAL PESTICIDE Mustard powder can act as an effective natural pesticide. Its strong smell and compounds can deter pests such as aphids, caterpillars, and beetles. Sprinkling mustard powder around plants can help protect them from insect infestations.
SOIL CONDITIONER Mustard powder can improve soil health by acting as a biofumigant. When incorporated into the soil, it helps reduce soil-borne diseases and nematodes, promoting healthier plant growth.
W**D SUPPRESSION:
The glycosylates in mustard powder can inhibit the germination and growth of w**ds. Applying mustard powder to garden beds can hep suppress w**d growth, reducing the competition for nutrient with your plants.
FUNGICIDE: Mustard powder has antifungal properties that can help combat fungal diseases like powdery mildew and and downy mildew.
A solution of mustard powder and water can be sprayed on affected plants to treat an prevent fungal infections.
NUTRIENT SOURCE: Mustard powder can provide essential nutrients to plants. It contains compounds that, when broke down, release nutrients such as nitrogen and sulfur into the soil, enhancing plant growth and health.
ANIMAL REPELLENT:
The strong odor and taste of mustard powder can deter animals like DEER, rabbits, and squirrels from munching on your plants. Sprinkling mustard powder around the garden can help keep these pests at bay.
COMPOSTING AID: Adding mustard powder to the compost piles can help speed up the decomposition process. Its natural compounds help break down organic matter more efficiently, resulting in richer compost for your garden.
I plan to use a couple of different ways to apply the mustard powder - using a 'puffer' on the foliage to deter the deer, will add some around each plant as I plant out in the spring - probably a tablespoon per plant too deter bugs at ground level. During summer can also use a water pump and spray it directly on the foliage. I will buy it in bulk from a local grocery store that has a good 'bulk section'....will check out Amazon as well.
