So thats a 67 percent increase in diesel price from January 26 to today. Sadly farming is likely the only sector that has absolutely zero ability to pass the increased costs on to the next sector. Meaning farmers must absorb these increases. Every other business can add fuel surcharge to the cost of their service which the customer pays that increased cost. So when food prices go up, and they will, remember the farmer had no part in that price increase. Every sector in the food supply chain, except the farmer, will be adding the increased energy costs which will eventually hit the consumer. Our government could provide some relief by lowering, or eliminating some of the taxes applied to fuel, if they really wanted to help.

1st calf of the year. Having cameras to monitor the cows during calving season is such a game changer. Left the barn an hour ago and nothing going on. Checked the camera at noon and noticed a heifer in labor. Heifers can sometimes have difficulty birthing their 1st calf so we try to shut them in so we can monitor them closely. I got to the barn, turned the lights on and then heard this loud roaring. She was a bit confused, part mothering instinct, part what the hell is this thing moving in the straw. Our calves get a scour vaccine, vitamin E with Selenium shot, and have their naval sprayed with iodine at birth. I think this calf will have to wait until momma calms down before I attempt those steps.
