This is winter beekeeping:
-traipsing through deep snow on the first sunny day in weeks
-smiling when you see all the dead bees on the snow - a sign of a living hive!
-clearing built-up snow from the lower entrances so the bees can bring out their dead

Hopefully they have enough remaining food stores to get them through until spring. We’re in wait and see mode now 🫣

Ok, growing corn is no joke.

This is organic cattle corn, meaning it’ll be fed to cows being organically raised for beef. And it’s made a mess of this field. Here’s the process:

1) Grow the corn - growing corn organically is a whole can of worms I’m not getting into here!
2) Harvest the corn using a combine - another can of worms having to do with the complexities of that equipment, the dryness of the corn, and the weather.
3) Haul wagons of corn to the storage bins & pile it in - dry it mechanically if needed (it’s usually needed).
4) Shred the corn residue - this is what I’m going in the video.
4) Plow the chopped corn residue under so it can decompose over the winter and the field can be planted with a different crop!

😮‍💨

So next time you’re eating a burger or a steak, think of this fieldwork that had to happen somewhere for the cattle farmer get that meat onto your plate!

PSA: when a farmer says “I’ll be there Saturday to drop off a load of spelt” they *might* mean 7am.

Like today.

Before I’d even had my second cup of coffee.

🤣

It’s cold out today, but just look at that sky! Get out there if you can 💜

Today was a busy day around here - the start of corn harvesting!

Dad drove the combine and Rob & I did trips to the grain elevator & back. 4 wagon loads and maybe 1/5 of the fields harvested 😮‍💨
