Bar M Ranch We're Dave Meister and Christina Caldwell, who run a small farm in New Ross, NS. This page is to tell stories and show pictures of our life on the farm.

We now work our professional "day-jobs" mostly from home and work on the farm in the evenings and weekends. We balance professional careers, with work on our family farm. The farm is a 6th generation cattle farm in New Ross, NS and the farm house was built around1845. Some of the things we do on the farm are:

- Host events under our pavilion
- Grow a large vegetable garden to sell produce
- Rai

se grass-fed angus cattle
- Raise chickens for meat and eggs
- Maple Syrup production
- Grow Blueberries
- Preserve, pickle, ferment and forage
- Harvest, prepare and deliver firewood
- Sell Christmas Tress and hand made wreathes

Our goal is to live a balanced, sustainable lifestyle using traditional farming techniques. At the same time incorporating modern technology like telecommuting, to stay connected.

We picked up some bulks bins of pumpkins and squash from a farm in the valley this morning, to feed to the cows. We sorted through, and found some nice cream colored pumkins and buttercup squash that we've put at the farmstand. By selling these, it helps offset the cost of what we will feed to the cows as treats.

The farmstand is open today, Saturday Aug 29 and tomorrow, Sunday Aug 30 from 9 am to 6 pm. We have yellow beans, shish*to peppers and sweet peppers (yellow and green) in the cooler, we have garlic, peach jam and chokecherry jelly, dahlias, cherry tomatoes, dried oregano, potted herbs, bunting.

We sell our dahlias in vases that we have got free or thrifted very cheap. If you buy flowers and don't have a use for the vase afterwards, they can be dropped off at the farmstand anytime and we will reuse them. We will also happily take mason jars and wood or paper berry boxes.

The garlic is finally dried, and ready to have the stocks and roots trimmed. After that, we sort all the bulbs by size for planting vs table garlic. We are registered for the Garlic Festival in Windsor, which is Saturday September 12, so by the Sept long weekend, we hope to have all of our garlic processed, organized and ready for sale.

The dahlias are blooming faster than I can harvest them now. These blooms look pretty, but they're are too far open to harvest for sale so they get deadheaded. That allows the plants to focus on the next flowers to bloom. Harvesting flowers is a daily task now. We will have lots of fresh picked dahlias for the farmstand each weekend, but if you want some mid- week blooms, let us know.

We got another 12 mm of rain this afternoon, in the span of 20 min. Sunday's rain was gentle here with no downpours anything like this or like the warnings were issued for. Thankfully this downpour today only lasted 20 min, because it was pretty intense!

Well, we didn't get anywhere near what the warnings were calling for, but we are happy to get 20 mm of rain today. On Friday, we had 40 tonnes of lime delivered and spread on the pastures and this rain has washed the lime off the blades of grass and down into the soil.
