Bar M Ranch We're Dave Meister and Christina Caldwell, who run a small farm in New Ross, NS. This page is to tell stories and show pictures of our life on the farm.

We now work our professional "day-jobs" mostly from home and work on the farm in the evenings and weekends. We balance professional careers, with work on our family farm. The farm is a 6th generation cattle farm in New Ross, NS and the farm house was built around1845. Some of the things we do on the farm are:

- Host events under our pavilion
- Grow a large vegetable garden to sell produce
- Rai

se grass-fed angus cattle
- Raise chickens for meat and eggs
- Maple Syrup production
- Grow Blueberries
- Preserve, pickle, ferment and forage
- Harvest, prepare and deliver firewood
- Sell Christmas Tress and hand made wreathes

Our goal is to live a balanced, sustainable lifestyle using traditional farming techniques. At the same time incorporating modern technology like telecommuting, to stay connected.

That's the first peek at garlic scapes! We will soon have 3000 of these to pick. When they're ready, we will have fresh bundles of garlic scapes for sale at the farm stand, Christina will make a bunch of dill pickled garlic scapes, and then freeze leftovers for our own freezer.

If anyone is interested in bulk quantities of garlic scapes, let us know.

Our first planting of beans is up. We planted 3 different varieties (Tendergreen, Pencil Pod Black Wax and Royal Burgundy) 10 days ago. We have left an empty row in the garden to plant another succession in a week or so. That will help prolong our bean harvest time.

The farmstand is open again today, Sunday June 14, 9 am to 6 pm. We have tomato plants (2 types of paste tomatoes), mixed variety 6-packs of pepper plants, lavender, rosemary, potted dahlias, eggs, rhubarb, jam, bunting, and birdhouse gourds.

The potted dahlias are ready to plant. They are a good size and already pinched. These will produce blooms earlier than planting tubers in the ground. They're $10 each and we have a few different named ones.

Our pink perennial poppys are starting to bloom. This year, we sold packets of seeds and potted plants grown from seeds saved from our poppies. It usually takes a couple years for the plants to start producing flowers, but it's worth the wait. These huge, pretty pink blooms put on a real show this time of year.

We had a new calf born this week! For the last couple weeks, we have been watching our cow Happy Go Lucky and expecting her to calve soon. On Sunday, we knew she was close to labour and were checking her every few hours including in the cold rain and wind we had overnight Sunday night. She waited until the weather passed and had a little bull calf on Monday.

Happy Go Lucky is a very protective mom, and wouldn't let us close to her or the baby. Thankfully she delivered the calf with no help needed. Her hind quarters of her udder were so swelled (full of milk) the calve had a hard time latching on. We've spent all week watching them (with binoculars from a safe distance) to see that he's getting milk and the calf seems to be figuring it out. Thankfully, he seems bright and strong, but we worried about them all week.

It's been a busy week with so much on the go, we haven't shared what we've been up to. We have been planting, planting, planting and working with the cattle. The dahlia garden is all planted now (500 in the ground again this year), and 75% of the veggie garden is planted.

We've also been busy with the rotational grazing for the cattle and dealing with a new calf. If you visit the farmstand this weekend, don't be surprised to see 2 little calves in the field! We will share more about that tonight.

We got 14 mm of rain yesterday (mostly last night). Over the weekend, we planted out lots of seeds and transplants to get ahead of the rain to water them in. It was much more windy today than we expected though and that gave the plants a bit of a beating. They were well hardened off spending lots of time outdoors in the wind, and under a fan inside, so hopefully they were tough enough to make it. The wind up here on the hill is no joke, so our plants need to get used to it to survive.

The farmstand is open today, Sunday June 7. We've moved the plants under cover of the farmstand, and have eggs and rhubarb in the cooler, rhubarb orange jam, and birdhouse gourds.

Yesterday, Christina planted peppers in our garden and we have 2x6 pack pepper plants left over. For $5, each pack has 2 plants, of 3 different varieties (Gatherer's Gold, shish*to, jalapeno).

Although it sucks to have rain on the weekend, we hope to get enough rain to water in all the seeds and transplants that we've planted in the last couple days!
