Bar M Ranch We're Dave Meister and Christina Caldwell, who run a small farm in New Ross, NS. This page is to tell stories and show pictures of our life on the farm.

We now work our professional "day-jobs" mostly from home and work on the farm in the evenings and weekends. We balance professional careers, with work on our family farm. The farm is a 6th generation cattle farm in New Ross, NS and the farm house was built around1845. Some of the things we do on the farm are:

- Host events under our pavilion
- Grow a large vegetable garden to sell produce
- Rai

se grass-fed angus cattle
- Raise chickens for meat and eggs
- Maple Syrup production
- Grow Blueberries
- Preserve, pickle, ferment and forage
- Harvest, prepare and deliver firewood
- Sell Christmas Tress and hand made wreathes

Our goal is to live a balanced, sustainable lifestyle using traditional farming techniques. At the same time incorporating modern technology like telecommuting, to stay connected.

The first few dahlias have emerged from the soil. 2 weeks ago, before a bunch of rain and cold temperatures, Christina planted the first half of the dahlias. With the wet soil and cold temperatures (a recipe for rot), we paused on planting. Only a few plants have emerged yet, but that's a good sign. We have to get the other half of the tubers in the ground now.

Our meat birds are just over 3 weeks old. They're almost full feathered. Hopefully the weather is turning around and they can start spending some time outside on grass each day.

People ask, but we don't sell chickens. We just raise enough for ourselves for the year. At a small scale like this, our cost per pound is high (and of we were to consider our time for looking after them, even higher) so we just raise 30 per year for our own freezer.

It's rhubarb season. We have a lot of rhubarb growing on the farm which means we can experiment with using it. Last year Christina made a trial batch of orange rhubarb jam, and it was really good. So, she's making more this year. With orange peel and fresh squeezed orange juice, along with the rhubarb it has a marmalade vibe.

What's your favorite way to use rhubarb?

The farmstand will be open this weekend (Sat/Sunday May 30/31) from 9 am to 6 pm. We have rhubarb, eggs, perennial plants, and a small restock of tomato plants. This morning (Saturday) Christina will have all of her dahlias at a plant sale in Chester so there won't be any at the farmstand. If you're in or near Chester you can see her at the old Chester Train Station from 9 am to noon. We also have a wedding on the farm this afternoon. The ceremony is 3 pm.

This weather forecast is tough! It keeps changing and this cold stretch that wasn't in the forecast when we were watching last week, is long. It's still too cold for tomatoes and peppers in the garden. The cold and lack of sun slows the pasture grass growth for the cows. We got a lot of rain immediately after Christina planted the first couple hundred dahlias. Cold/wet soil is not good for the tubers.

We are hoping for no rain tomorrow for the wedding here on the farm at least. The forecast for Saturday has changed so many times in the past week, it's been hard to know what tomorrow will be like.

Saturday morning, Christina will have the last of the dahlia tubers and a limited amount of potted dahlias at the Chester Garden Club's plant sale. These potted dahlia tubers (Bride to Be, Beatrice and Oreti Adele) will give you a head start on blooms and were started early and specifically for this plant sale.

We plant our dahlia tubers directly in the ground because of the volume we grow. Ther's no way we could start 500 tubers in pots and tbe transplant them. If you're looking for earlier blooms though, you can pre pot and grow dahlias inside or in the greenhouse ahead of the last frost.

Although it was nice to have a dry week last week while we were off from our day jobs and working on the farm, things were getting dry and we are happy to have got this rain.
