BC Market General groceries In May, 1986, Hanna and Marion Kawas first opened a grocery/convenience store in New Westminster called BC Market.

Initially, it was a modest affair; decades later, it is still in the same location but has developed dramatically. It is now a dynamic extended family operation that offers a wide selection of Arabic food stuffs, frozen, bulk and packaged. BC Market managed to establish some firsts in its history – it was the first commercial spot in the Lower Mainland to proudly highlight the Palestinian flag on

its logo and over its front door, and was also the first to openly incorporate the term “Arabic food” into its advertising. Additionally, BC Market has a long history of supporting Palestinian and progressive events in the community, through publicity, food donations for receptions, and gift certificates and prizes for raffles; it was the first store to bring Palestinian olive oil to the Vancouver market and still carries many Palestinian food and non-food products (including keffieyehs).
