There are moments in business when you realize you’re no longer trying to explain your vision, others are starting to see it too. Today is one of those moments! We are incredibly proud to share that The Station has been featured in Canada’s National Food Security Strategy as an example of how regional food hubs can strengthen domestic food production, reduce food waste, support farmers, and connect communities with Canadian grown food. We’ve known for years that food hubs are regional food infrastructure. They create markets, transform surplus produce into value added foods, strengthen local food systems and help with public procurement. Thank you to everyone that is making this happen. We are proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited about what’s ahead!

The National Food Security Strategy that was launched today will help strengthen the Canadian agriculture sector’s food supply chain over the next ten years in four key ways:

• A $1B investment in food infrastructure, including food terminals and hubs, to help independent grocers compete and drive down prices for consumers🛒

• Building on previous initiatives that help small and medium-sized processors by creating a new $1B Agri-food Project Finance Fund under Farm Credit Canada🥫

• Reducing reliance on imports by investing $750M in controlled environment agriculture, like greenhouses, that support growing fruits and vegetables year-round🍓

• Cutting red tape by helping provincially-licensed food businesses meet federal requirements so their products can be sold across Canada✂️

One of my favourite things to do when I travel is visit grocery stores.

You can learn so much about what products people are excited about, what flavours and foods are being celebrated and how our products fit!

As part of our Nova Scotia trade mission, I had the opportunity to visit Longo’s and Farm Boy alongside an incredible group of Atlantic Canadian food entrepreneurs.

A huge thank you to the entire Longo’s team for welcoming us into your store and sharing insights into the business. It was inspiring to see the focus on fresh food, local suppliers, and creating a shopping experience that feels genuinely connected to community. The icecream was delicious!!

Thank you as well to Farm Boy Inc. for taking the time to meet with us. I loved seeing the energy in the stores, the emphasis on fresh produce, and the unique products that keep customers coming back to discover something new. The monkey and chickens are a nice touch!

As the owner of The Station Food Hub Company in Nova Scotia, visits like these are incredibly valuable. We spend our days working with Atlantic Canadian farmers to create value-added products and seeing how retailers connect customers with local food helps us think differently about our own opportunities for growth.

More than anything, I left feeling excited about the potential for what’s to come.

There is tremendous opportunity and I am looking forward to continuing the conversations that started this week.
