First caledon quail chick has hatched!

Tomorrow is hatch day for these caledon quail! We have one already pipping. (That is the Crack in the egg however this one is pipped at the wrong end normally pips at the fat end, so we shall see) The chick starts with a pip then works its way around the egg to unzip the egg and work its way out. It can be a 24 hour process of hard work! Stay tuned!

The gardens are coming alive

Ordered 8 new ready to lay pullets in mid January, today was the day to pick them up at my local feed store. Well 4 of the 8 were right and 4 of a single breed were wrong. So I called the hatchery, explained i ordered 4 norians not speckled sussex and a few pictures later freys is sending 4 rtl norians free of charge to my feed store and I can keep the sussex. Thank you freys! Everyone was so happy with their new home it was a challenge for John McSavage and i to get them into the coop tonight. Note to self dont wrangle chickens with eggs in your pocket. :)

This was a friends old deck flooring that john replaced. Now repurposed into a 100% free, raised bed for my sugarbaby watermelons. Trellis to be added as they grow out of old fencing.

And the incubators are full again! We are now hatching caledon and bobwhite quail! Hopefully in just over 3 short months we should have laying caledon hens! Laying blue eggs. Quail eggs are great for salads and pickling. Perfect bite size. Caledon, 18 days to hatch, mature and ready to lay between 8 and 10 weeks
Bobwhite 24 days to hatch and mature at 16 weeks starting to lay white eggs around 25 weeks of age.
