Woohoo! We are opening this season with a series of Sourdough Workshops! ๐ŸžRegistration for dates the first and second weekend of June are now live on newgrain.ca! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Come and join for a fun-filled day learning the craft of sourdough -- from learning about how to take care of your starter, selecting flour types, mixing dough, flip and folds, shaping, scoring, baking techniques and more! Ticket cost is $175/pp and includes lots of hands on experience and instruction in a small class-size environment, a delicious New Grain lunch, recipe cards, a container of starter, freshly baked loaves of bread to take home, and an unquantifiable amount of fun! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Long time no speak! What an absolutely mega winter we've all had! ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ˜…

Today, zipping around the island, the wonderful feeling of spring thaw was -at long last- in the air. ๐Ÿƒ How glorious! Cosy little New Grain remains dormant for now, but summer will soon be upon us, and with it the smell of fresh bread, hustle and bustle, and open doors at 37 Corbiere Road! Can't wait to greet all of you! ๐Ÿฅฐ

We are so excited about growing into this second season in M'Chigeeng, and to offer you an expanded retail section focused on artisanal culinary products from across Northern Ontario, + speciality coffees on our new espresso machine โ˜• , craft slushies, cold brew for those hot days (they're coming!) and much more - as well as our usual focus on all things sourdough and soft pretzels, of course. ๐Ÿฅฐ ๐Ÿž

In anticipation of our opening date and expanded hours this year we are looking for team members to join us for the season! ๐Ÿ’ A full-time manager to help steer the ship, a full-time baker to assist with our bread and baked goods production, and two part-time front of house staff to assist with coffee, drinks, food, and retail. ๐Ÿ’—

We've been prepping all day and can't wait to serve you this weekend. Sourdough, pretzels, focaccia, excellent coffee sourced from bruce mines, maple sticky buns, local meat and eggs from Manitoulin, house smoked fish from sheshegwaning, ice cream from Death in Venice, tourtiรจre made from as many island ingredients as we could muster, Kapuskasing cheeses, great chat, and more, much more. โ„๐ŸŽ„

Open Friday-Sunday, 11-5 this weekend โค

Special sourdough this weekend is cranberry, orange zest and dark chocolate. Focaccia this week is potato and cheese (delish!).

๐ŸŽ„ This is just a quick PSA ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ˜‰ that at the bakery we are very much looking forward to greeting you this weekend!! Weโ€™ll be open Friday and Saturday this weekend (Dec 12-13) from 11-5 both days, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Dec 19-21) leading up to Christmas. ๐ŸŽ„

NEW GRAIN / BAKER ANNOUNCEMENT! ๐ŸŽ‰

DUE TO THE ISLAND-WIDE POWER OUTAGE SCHEDULED FROM 7-3 this SUNDAY, our last day of service until December 4th will be TOMORROW, OCTOBER 25.

Tomorrow, we'll be open from 11-5 with loads of loaves, lots of pretzels and focaccia, and all the usual you can expect from us (Island beef and fish, whole rabbit, Kapuskasing cheese, pickled organic Three Forks beets, Ontario-only made beverages, house-made bone broth, hot apple cider by the cup), and more!

After tomorrow we will be CLOSED until DEC 4 (please do anticipate loads of holiday specials we will have in store for the Holiday season! ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Come on in and load up in the meantime - we can't wait to see you, as always.๐Ÿ˜

Greetings you ๐Ÿ”ฅ Fine Folks ๐Ÿ”ฅ on wind swept, rainy Manitoulin ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ’จ๐ŸŒง

Well, we knew it was coming, and now it's finally here! The bluster! The fallen leaves! The frosty mornings! ๐Ÿ˜…

I'll be honest tho, being in the bakery at this time of year *is* extra delightful ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿฅฐ.
Pulling fragrant, fresh sourdough loaves out of hot ovens in the warm bakery while the rain pours down outside is *p e a k* cozy! ๐Ÿค— ๐Ÿฅฐ

We have loads of loaves happening for you this weekend ๐Ÿž - classic, toasted sesame, rye, cinnamon raisin, and this weekend's special - maple syrup and walnut. We also have two types of focaccia by the slice - baked wild apple and turbinado sugar, and confit pearl onion with a balsamic glaze. Plus, $5 cups of mulled cider, a selection of tasty sammies, oh so soft pretzels, grocery items, and local bevs!

FYI: Our last day of service will be *next Sunday, October 26,* while we take a pause for November ๐Ÿ™. We'll be BACK in *December* with holiday NG classics you may remember, like New Grain's hefty tourtiรจre, and soft stollen bread with candied citrus and powdered sugar ๐Ÿ˜Š. We'll also be restocking on Northern Ontario cheeses, smoked meats and fish - and of course lots and lots of sourdough - to make your holiday spreads shine with delicious and local food made with love! ๐ŸŽ‰

But in the meantime, come on out! Brave the weather, take in the comfort, and stock up on your favourites before we close for a bit. Our sourdough is *very freezer friendly - slice 'er up, pop it in the freezer, and toast a slice in the morning. It'll taste as though you just bought it.

Oooowee Manitoulin! It *is* sunny out there, but no doubt a cold snap has settled in! ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒก Time for allll the creature comforts โ€“ an extra quilt on the bed, a slow roast in the oven, tea or any other beverage of choice ๐Ÿฅƒ ๐Ÿ˜…, lighting of the wood stove ๐Ÿ”ฅ maybe? โ€“ as we all get ready for a bountiful Thanksgiving weekend surrounded by family and friends on Manitoulin, this ever wondrous slice of paradise, or to visit kin further afield. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Growing up, this time of year was always a big deal in my household, with all of us holding hands to say what we were thankful for before diving into the dishes my mum had lovingly prepared ๐Ÿ™. As a business owner and baker at the end of a gorgeous summer in New Grain's new location, I am thankful for all of you, for your support and custom each week, and of course to M'Chigeeng powerhouses ๐Ÿงก and Corbiere Lumber ๐Ÿงก for making the idea of a new location a reality, and inviting me in. ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ™Œ

New Grain will have a mega selection of freshly baked sourdough bread, pretzels, speciality focaccia, mulled cider and as many treats as we can muster waiting to greet you on Friday morning, as well as on Saturday and Sunday. Evening Manitoulin! ๐Ÿ’— ๐Ÿฅฐ

We're entering into such a beautiful and cosy time of year. ๐Ÿฅฐ Amazing bounty all around us, and stunner, ribboning drives transforming on the daily as we head into peak autumn. ๐Ÿ‚ Couldn't be more thankful to be here! ๐Ÿ’ž

This is to remind you all that we are OPEN from 11-5 tomorrow and Saturday, 11-4 on Sunday. We will have fresh sourdough at Three Forks Farms Manitoulin tomorrow (Fri) from 10, and at Buie's in Spring Bay from 12 on Saturday. If you can't make it out to M'Chigeeng, please scoop from either place! ๐Ÿ’ซ

Our freezer is fully restocked with a mega amount of cuts from Pure Island Beef ๐Ÿ‚ - we have been particularly side-eyeing the beef ribs ๐Ÿ˜… For these slow-cooker days, what's better than coming home to stew, bolognese, ribs or whatever else takes your fancy? ๐Ÿซ 

Quality sourdough suits all these dishes, not to mention crisp mornings with a cup of tea or coffee and (heavily) buttered toast, a quick and melty grilled cheese, or a packed lunch w/a sandwich made from thick cut slices. โ˜บ๏ธ Comforting, simple pleasures that make these days all the better. We're also fully stocked with Sheshegwaning rainbow and koho salmon and whole rabbit for wherever your meals may go! ๐ŸŸ

We're back in stock with Lavender Lemonade from our friends at Manitoulin Farmstead, and have two new bevs from Plaid Shirt Farms based in Otterville. (Psst: the black current is my personal favourite - but both are delicious ๐Ÿ˜…). Zip on by and grab one for your cupholder while you make your way doing all the things you do! ๐Ÿ’ช

We've ALSO stocked pints of Death In Venice Gelato Company - my personal fav. gelato in the province. It's that good, seriously. If you folks like it, we're ready to double down and get a dedicated freezer. The gelato is creamy, addictive, unique, and the perfect way to end a meal (or eat from the carton while binging Netflix!) ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜†

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hello to each and every one of you! ๐Ÿ”ฅ This is an appreciation post for the amazing thing we did last night. We're grateful to all of you who joined in on the feast we orchestrated. โœจ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฅ‚

It does take a team to make a dream work, and it is a mission of a drive to come up from Six Nations to collaborate with a bakery owner on Manitoulin Island. ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ’“ Chef and his sous did just that, swooping in to help execute an evening that, dare I say, will be long remembered by all who attended. ๐Ÿงก

Chef Taylor is not only an incredible professional to work with, but particularly exceptional in closing the gap between outside and inside the kitchen: foraging and land-based food are as much a part of how he operates as a chef as his easy familiarity with "classic" technique, resulting in a unique style that was a joy to collaborate with. Shout out is definitely owed to his sous, Phil, who anticipates everything, keeps things cohesive, and *bonus* has great playlists. ๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ˜… Thank you Chef! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ ๐Ÿ’—

Everything we did for our menu was locally sourced and made with care and detail. 'Northern Ontario' designates a massive 88% of our province, yet in this area there are few and far between "food experiences," let alone restaurants that serve local ingredients. Carving out a cuisine that defines our area - Manitoulin - means looking closely at what we have around us, and making great, nourishing things out of it. The concept of "local" reads different in the North - - and New Grain is all about leaning into it, not only by sourcing from local farmers but, and perhaps most importantly, learning about indigenous foodways from experts like Taylor.

How about this weather, seriously! ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒž Greetings on yet another prefect day, you gorgeous people on Manitoulin or from afar! Thanks for such a busy one today โ€“ we never know what to expect on a Friday after Labour Day, but you folks were here ๐Ÿ‘ for it ๐Ÿ‘ and we are always happy to see you, have a chat, and serve you our freshly baked goods โ€“ today you sold us out right quick! ๐ŸŽ‰

To all of you that have reserved Hunt Camp Feast tickets ๐ŸฆŒ ๐Ÿฝ ๐Ÿฅ‚โ€“ we see you! A group email will be sent out this Sunday so that everyone knows the How, What, and Where of our deluxe dinner themed around the hunter and the fall season - happening next Friday, the 26th! Eek โ€“ so excited! 4 tickets have become available due to a last minute cancellation โ€“ let us know if you want to scoop them! Itโ€™s going to be a really special night, we canโ€™t wait. ๐Ÿ’“

Meanwhile, many of you have probably gotten a chance to meet the wonder that is our excellent service, Hunter. ๐Ÿ’ชTheir attention to detail and general awesomeness is part of what has made this season at New Grain truly shine. โœจ The fall bouquets weโ€™ve been rocking on our counter are due to them โ€“ not to mention the gourmet sandwiches so many of you turn up to enjoy โ€“ and, to be fair, their skill at keeping everything in line, while greeting all of you with New Grain hospitality. ๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tomorrow weโ€™ll be open from 11-5 and on Sunday 11-4. Weโ€™re also busy restocking โ€“ a whole side of beef in various cuts from the west end *Pure Island Beef* ๐Ÿฎ is coming in Monday, fresh rainbow and koho salmon from Sheshegwaning FN ๐Ÿ  in this weekend, and another order of rabbits from Massey this upcoming Tuesday (diversify your protein folks!). A new order of artisanal cheese ๐Ÿง€from our friends at Fromagerie Kapuskoise happening Thursday of next week. Bounty of the season, right? We're blessed.

Come get tangy, and purchase hand-shaped bread or delve into our ethically sourced and dare we say *bangin* local ingredients sourced from people we know, or just grab a cinnamon sugar pretzel while paying us a visit! ๐Ÿ’“
