Have you ever been laughed at...?
We have! It usually happens when we explain how we keep our chickens... 🐔
They say "They don't need all that! They're JUST chickens!" But you know what we say? The proof is in the pudding; the biggest component of which is eggs! 😁
🥰 We try to put ourselves in our girls' place by asking "what would we want if we were a chicken?" We improve continuously based on how we can better answer that question through our ever-deepening relationship with our birds; which is about more than basic animal welfare practices.
🤠 Our flock is not on our property to only generate the most revenue possible from each bird but rather, to be part of our larger homestead ecosystem. Our older "retired" birds do not get culled nor are they given away; they instead get to live our their lives receiving the exact same care and attention as our younger, more productive birds. We even sometimes adopt seniors knowing full well that they are not laying more than a couple times a week at most.
In our opinion, an animal's value is not solely tied to their [financial] productivity. At Euterra, the chicken manure is composted and used in our gardens as an organic fertilizer for our produce. Our flock will also become an integral part of a new farm project that will be debuted later this year or next year.
Even if those reasons weren't the case, we would STILL keep our old girls because it's part of the contract we make with ALL our animals. They provide something (eggs, meat, farm guarding, etc) for a while and in exchange, we will do everything in our power to provide them the best life possible with the lowest amount of stress. If this is confusing and sounds kinda weird, please ask about it! We apply this philosophy to ALL our farming activities. 🫡
Because we really do believe that "you are what you eat", we go to great lengths to ensure our chickens are fed an extremely comprehensive and well rounded diet.👩🍳
Our girls are fed a fermented grains/pulses porridge daily 🥣, cooked meat🍖 & eggs🥚 when they need extra protein, fresh homegrown herbs and micro-greens🌱 to supplement their wild foraging, crushed shells (mussels, egg shells, crustacean)🦞, homegrown (and purchased) produce 🥦, and even seaweed and cooked mushrooms.
Our birds also receive bespoke herbal blend as supplements (made on farm from purchased and homegrown herbs) on a schedule and as needed. They are treated for the odd medical issue using herbal medicine only. Feel free to ask why we swear by herbal medicine for our animals. (This is not advice, just what we do.)
