You know you’re a farmer when you choose to put money into the farm instead of fixing the floors, windows, toilet, couches, chairs, etc. in your own house 🥴🤣

A new barn floor?
Absolutely.

A better setup for the animals?
No question.

A project that improves the quality of food for our customers?
Take our money.

Fixing something in the house we’ve been looking at for five years?
Maybe next year…😅

The animals and the people who trust us to feed their families have always come before the luxuries of a nicer home.

The left side here is no good 😵‍💫

We were getting ready to move the herd out to pasture, which meant gathering everyone up and keeping them close to the gate for a while.

The problem is that high animal impact can do a lot of damage when it stays in one place too long.

Plants get grazed down to the dirt.
Thousands of hooves pack the soil.
Roots get pulled out.
Plants become stressed.

This isn’t what we aim for, but sometimes temporary sacrifice areas happen when you’re moving animals, calving, dealing with weather, or managing a large herd.

The good news?

Nature is incredibly resilient.

With rest, sunshine, rain, and time, the right side will soon be spreading back onto the left side and healing the damage 🌱💚

One of the most important lessons in regenerative farming is that it’s not about never making mistakes or never causing impact.

It’s about understanding how nature heals and giving her the opportunity to do it

One Life….

Why aren’t we running like we are on fire towards our wildest dreams?

We got one shot at this, why are we so afraid of being the crazy one?

I want people to look at us and be like, that family is nuts!!

Good!

We have one shot at this life. I would rather you call me crazy and a dreamer than a settler.

We weren’t made to stand in line. We were made to create, build, explore, love deeply, take risks, and leave a mark on the world.

Don’t waste your time standing in line and we sure won’t either!

We are finally getting cement in the barn!

Which means the days of foxes digging under the walls to help themselves to chicks should be over 😱 (yes… that did happen once 🥴).

It will make cleaning much easier, but the real bonus is the heated floor for the chickens during the winter.

For the last 6 years we’ve relied on deep compost bedding to heat the barn naturally, and it has worked incredibly well. The compost creates its own heat while giving the chickens a warm, comfortable place to spend the winter.

If you’re looking for heating ideas for a barn, greenhouse, or animal shelter, don’t overlook the power of compost. Nature is pretty amazing at creating heat all on its own.

Sean found these beauties last week! 🍄

One of the things that makes our farm suppers so special is that we don’t just grow and raise food—we forage some of it too.

From the pasture to the forest, we love serving food that comes directly from the land around us.

Now we’re hoping this cool, rainy weather gets these mushrooms fruiting for supper season!

We only have a few left before the rest become market-season pigs. We need more pork chops, hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and all the good stuff before market season kicks into full gear!

Our forest-raised pigs head in on June 12.

If you’ve never ordered a pig before, this is a great chance to find out what pork is supposed to taste like.

Pigs raised outdoors. Rooting, exploring, sunbathing, and enjoying a diverse diet the way pigs were designed to.
