Shari’s Picks® for November!

The Toronto Blue Jays have united fans and Canadians from across the country! Despite falling short of the big win, they played one of the best World Series in baseball history. This team reminded us what national pride feels like. What a ride!

Inniskillin Estate Wines is celebrating 50 years in Niagara—a significant chapter in wine-making history in Canada and another source of national pride for me. I remember visiting the winery for the first time over 40 years ago.

As a kick-start to your holiday shopping, I have a standout Ontario sparkling wine, Canadian Whisky, and a spectacular brandy from Spain to recommend.

Shari’s Picks® for October!

It’s harvest season for Ontario’s wine regions — from Niagara Peninsula to Prince Edward County and Lake Erie North Shore. Winemakers are balancing timing and weather to achieve the perfect time to pick their crop. A good harvest is expected this year, despite the summer drought and heat.

Why not try a few of my Ontario fall favourites? In addition to other pairings, each wine can be served with your Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings.

I love to travel, a fun and quick way to discover new lands is with your wine glass! I have three more recommendations for you.

Shari’s Picks® for September!

I am just back from a three-week holiday in England and Croatia. The trip was fabulous!

Croatia has over 2,500 years of winemaking tradition, dating back to the Greeks and Romans, and offers a wide variety of native grape varieties that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. And there is a vibrant local wine culture. Sadly, we won’t see many here. Less than 10% is exported, as most is consumed in Croatia and by its neighbour, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A highlight was Tomac Millennium, made in the traditional Champagne method with Chardonnay, Graševina, and local varieties. From Plešivica, west of Zagreb, Tomac is widely regarded as the benchmark of Croatian sparkling wine. The family has been making wine here for over 200 years and emphasizes organic and biodynamic practices. Tomac Millennium was complex and creamy with a crisp, minerally finish. It was delicious with my sea bass!
