Stony Mountain Farm

Stony Mountain Farm A little ranch in the South Cariboo selling at farmers markets from the Cariboo to lower mainland

Stony Mountain Farm is a small-scale farm which was born in the picturesque Squamish Valley back in 2008. In summer of 2021, we relocated to our new ranch in Buffalo Creek BC approx 20 minutes north/east of 100 Mile House. We raise a small flock of laying hens for eggs, farrow to finish heritage pork, heritage chicken and holiday turkeys during the warmer months. We also have a growing herd of Ice

landic sheep with lamb, fibre and pelts planned to be available in the future. All our animals are raised on pasture or a combination of pasture and woodland and fed certified organic or non-gmo feed made locally. In summer 2022 we will be producing our own hay and hope to produce some of our own grains in the future. Our belief in whole animal butchery lead to the development of lard based soap made by Tracy as well as our prepared foods line made by Salt and Thyme in Langley. You can find our products either via our online shop www.localline.ca/stony-mountain-farm and at farmers markets throughout the sea to sky corridor (Squamish and Pemberton) and the lower mainland.

Friday evening just after 8pm Dan had texted me to let know hwy 1 (my typical route to the city) was closed due to a fire in Lytton. It was windy at our house and suddenly the power went out. After a few minutes and a text to the neighbour to see if theirs was too I found out a tree had come down on the power lines 2kms away and a fire had started. When the tree fell, it and the lines fell on the barbed wire fence conducting for about 800m, igniting and catching fire along the road

At the time we thought power would be out for at least a day and with chicks in the brooder, which is automated, no water as the pump couldn’t run without power and freezers with product I text Dan, who was away at work, I needed him to come home as this was out of my area to deal with

Without hesitation he was on his way!

We passed on the way around 3am as he was coming into town and I headed to the market

He got generators hooked up and running…..Murphy’s law the power came back shortly after so after unhooking, checking everyone he headed back to the coast to return for his shift Saturday evening.

We don’t have kids but we have our dogs, cats and this farm (which somedays I question what we’re doing) and many lives depending on us and without Dan none of it would be possible

Thanks Dan for all you do for us 🐕🐈‍⬛🐄🐏🐖🐓🥚👩🏼‍🌾🧑🏻‍🌾

Just another Wild and crazy week on the farm 🤪

🐓 Last week the chickens were moved to pasture
🐏 A late season lamb arrived
🐖 Piglets
🧼 worked on our restock of our lard based soaps
🐏 Plus a vet emergency with our bottle lamb Petey whose eye developed some cloudiness which progressed quickly and was close to rupturing. It was a puzzling case but thankful to Dr Ross at Williams Lake Veterinary Hospital for seeing him and the eye seems to be responding to treatment.

Some moments from yesterdays annual sheering day for the sheep 🐏

Each May the sheerer comes to remove the girls wool coats to ensure their comfortable through summer but also to allow new growth of wool and not overgrowth. Icelandic Sheep CAN loose theirs fibre naturally through a process called rooing but it can become matted easily causing tension and discomfort.

We’ll be bagging up the fibre to have it eventually processed into wool pellets for plants and garden 🪴 we’ve always believed in whole animal butchery and this belief transfers into by products such as wool trying to use as much as we can
