The difference a year can make. 🌱

I am so excited and fully committed to our regenerative farming practices. I love knowing that the work we do today can have a positive and lasting impact on the land we own and manage for years to come. But if I’m honest, sometimes I get impatient. I want to see progress. I want signs that all the hard work is actually improving soil health and supporting a healthier ecosystem.

One of the practices we’ve been using through the winter is bale grazing. A large portion of our land is very sandy — and in some areas, pure sand — with very low organic matter, poor structure, and very few nutrients for roots to establish and plants to thrive.

For the past two winters we’ve been bale grazing, and the results are speaking for themselves. This is one of those rare occasions where we haven’t had to wait long to see a dramatic improvement in the land. The increased organic matter, manure, urine, and leftover hay are helping feed the soil and build fertility naturally.

The cows will be back on this area soon to add even more nutrients and continue the cycle. Nature really is amazing. 🌾🐄

And right on cue, Kaos gave us a beautiful heifer this afternoon. Within minutes, the calf was standing and nursing. 🥰

I don’t usually enjoy the sound of lip smacking when people are eating… but when it’s a brand new calf eagerly sucking, that’s a whole different story.

This is Kaos’ second calf, and she is proving to be an incredible mum — calm, attentive, and trusting. She had no problem with me sitting right beside her as her newborn started nursing, which is always such a special moment to witness.

Grazing season is just around the corner! 🌱

Until the grass is ready, we use a bale unroller to feed our cattle. We choose areas of pasture that are struggling and could use a little extra fertility boost. The cows do a great job cleaning up the bales, but any leftover residue, along with the manure and urine they leave behind, helps feed soil microbes 🦠, improve organic matter, and naturally build healthier, more productive pasture.

Once one section has received enough fertility, we move on to the next area and repeat the process.

Unrolling bales also ensures all of the animals have equal access to feed at the same time, reducing competition and keeping the herd content and calm.

The videos show how we unroll the bales, and the photo is an example of the manure and residue left behind after the cattle are moved out of that section. I’ll be sharing more photos this grazing season so you can see how these fields respond after some rest and time to grow using these newly added natural nutrients! 🌿

Maren and I went for a long walk checking the cows in the pasture this afternoon.

We started with the heifers, and Maren had a great time making friends with those girls. Then we headed over to the cow herd to check on those ladies too.

Luca insisted on following us and ended up walking the entire loop with us.

By the time we stopped for a photo, I think both of them were officially done with the adventure… and my photography 😂

Just a typical afternoon together on the farm! 🐄🌿😊

We would like to wish you a happy and healthy New Year! We also want to take a moment to sincerely thank our customers for your continued support. We truly love being able to raise nutritious, grass-finished beef for our local community.

Every year is special, but 2025 is one we will never forget. The birth of our daughter, Maren, in April gave us a whole new perspective on life and filled the year with countless special moments; with many more to come as she’s now crawling and starting to take her first steps.

Despite a dry summer, we were grateful to extend our grazing season just as we had hoped, with the herd grazing well into December. We also made a change to a new butcher, which allowed us to introduce 100% beef sausages and some new steak cuts that we’re excited about.

As we move into these colder and slightly slower winter months, we’re exploring new opportunities for the farm in the year ahead. We’ve also set a goal to share more of our journey here on social media…so stay tuned!

Maren and I moving cows as we strip graze some cover crop regrowth. Definitely not a huge amount there given the lack of rain but the cows are still enjoying something nice and green this time of year.
