SFIZI

SFIZI Sfizi specializes in gourmet Italian street food like the type you have likely eaten on the streets of Rome or Naples. Nothing went to waste.

This artisanal savory food can be eaten as an appetizer, snack, or even a main dish. For pricing and order information send us a DM. Currently Sfizi is specializing in a meat and vegetarian version of the Roman calzone, which we have playfully renamed 'calzini'. A little smaller than the original Roman calzone, the calzini showcases a more delicate but packed calzone. The word calzone, meaning tro

users, or 'calza', meaning stockings, was used for this southern Italian street food as they resembled the clothing they used to fill with food at Christmas. Calzini, meaning socks, renamed by Sfizi, will continue the tradition of being filled with savoury delights. For those of you who know a little about calzoni and panzerotti, you will know that the two are very similar and depending where you are in the southern parts of Italy you will find them named calzoni or panzerotti. The filling may vary but the root of the food, in both cases, was created when scraps of dough left over from making bread were put to good use. The dough was filled with whatever happened to be available in the house. If deep fried, it was called a panzerotto. If baked, typically it was called a calzone. However, as this type of street food made its way further north from southern Italy, a hybrid of both is formed in Rome where the calzone is not always baked, rather deep fried, and called a calzone Romano! Sfizi has taken the much loved calzone Romano and using simple, natural ingredients, continuing the hand made craft of the calzone, has fondly renamed them 'calzini'. We are now ready and excited to introduce the calzini to Ottawa! Sfizi is also offering another all time favorite of the Roman street foods, the Suppli di riso! Like the calzini, it was also created to use up the leftover rice, meats or vegetables, and the quintessential mozzarella cheese. This delicious snack is breaded and fried. See our page entries for a historical rendition of the roman snack.
