Bob and Karen meant a lot to many people and we want to give everyone the opportunity to honour them the way that they deserve.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Russell. For those who had visited Stoneface Dolly’s in the last 20 years, you would have undoubtedly been greeted and shown to your seat by the affable South African.

Bob treated all the guests in his restaurant as though they were family, frequently whisking away a fussy baby to give the parents a few moments of peace to enjoy their meals.

With an incredible passion for food, he would incorporate new menu items from the places he would travel, from Portugal to the Southern United States.

Community and charity would be themes throughout his life, either holding frequent fund raising functions at his establishment or hosting open invite Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for anyone who needed somewhere to go during the holidays.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Jeff, Katie, and the whole family.

Bob worked and lived by two words:
Hustle and Heart
He had both in spades.

Godspeed, rest easy and be with your beloved Karen again.
You will not be forgotten.

We’re back!

This week we’re bringing you Bob Russell, the owner of Stoneface Dolly’s, famous and long sought after piri piri chicken. This sauce is the bomb! I remember the day that Bob returned from gallivanting around Portugal so clearly. His mission for the next two weeks was to replicate the incredible flavours of this iconic Portuguese sauce.....he tried countless recipes and bought every single premade brand on the market. The kitchen was in total chaos and like a mad scientist, he finally did it. Even better than the original, he boasted. We’ll let you be the judge of that though.... Bob, this one is for you and Karen, for your wild adventures and for your passion to bring the world to us.

It is with a heavy heart we announce that after a battle with cancer, Karen passed away on May 19th. She passed peacefully and with her devoted husband Bob by her side. She lived the last of her days as she had lived the rest of her life, with grace, humour, and most of all with kindness. For those of you who were regulars at the restaurant, you most likely saw Karen around laughing or had Bob tell you wonderful and loving stories about her. It was clear the way he spoke about her that he was truly a man in love. One of our favourite stories of Karen and Bob was on their wedding day about 15 years ago. What was supposed to be a beautiful Saturday wedding day almost didn't happen due to a short staffed kitchen and a busy brunch. As the hour of the wedding approached, Bob and Jeff were knee deep in orders, nervously glancing at the clock. Luckily, they broke away just in time to arrive and see Karen looking as beautiful as ever. Stoneface Dolly's would not be the restaurant it was without the guidance of Karen, and we owe her so much. Sending all our love to Bob, Jeff, Katie, and the whole family during this time. We will miss you, Karen.

Have you been missing our bobotie?? Our friends at Bouffage are serving a beef and tofu bobotie for their weekly meal delivery "Love Box"

Sending all the love, one year later.

On March 16th, Stoneface Dolly's closed it's doors for the final time and our lives were changed forever. As anyone who walked through the Stoneface door knows, Bob and Karen owned and ran a very special place that can never be replicated. It was our family and our second home and we'll be forever grateful that we were once a part of something so amazingly unique.

The extra love in this week's box is for all the wonderful customers we became friends with over the years, the lovely band of misfits we called our work family and to the legendary Bob, an icon and titan of the restaurant world.

In homage, the inspiration behind this week's box is Bob's South African roots.

Beef or Tofu Bobotie -a traditional dish made from ground beef (or mixed tofu) and mild curry spices

Chakalaka -a light, crunchy and warm curried salad

Malva Pudding -South African bread pudding similar to a pouding chomeur, or a sticky toffee pudding

GRATITUDE POST!!

We want to take a few seconds to talk about family. When you work in a restaurant your coworkers become your family and this is exactly how it was at Stoneface Dolly’s. Owners Bob and Karen not only had their own family, they took care of an entire bunch of restaurant misfits too. Needless to say, all of us were devastated when we found out that our second home would be closed for good. There will never be another restaurant like it!

Two of those misfits, now cofounders of Lovebox and owners of wanted to do something nice for Bob & Karen as a way of saying thanks to our restaurant parents. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY since they both celebrated birthdays last week!

If you live outside of Ottawa we will ship the cookbook to you. We are currently working on options to ship to the US but at the moment the shipping is within Canada only.

After announcing that the restaurant will be closing, we received a touching outpouring of good wishes. This support has included a renewed interest in the cookbook that we created 5 years ago. We are happy to announce that we are in the process of printing a new run of cookbooks and that our friends at the Morning Owl Parkdale have generously offered to distribute them for us.
