One of the most common service calls we get? A water softener that's stopped working and nine times out of ten, the brine tank is empty.

Here's why that matters.

Your water softener works through a process called ion exchange. As hard water passes through the resin tank, hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium are captured by resin beads and replaced with sodium. Over time, those resin beads get saturated and need to be cleaned that's where the salt comes in.

During the regeneration cycle, a saltwater solution (brine) is drawn from the brine tank and flushed through the resin, stripping the hardness minerals off the beads and washing them down the drain. The resin is then recharged and ready to soften water again.

No salt = no brine. No brine = no regeneration. No regeneration = hard water running through your home like you never had a softener at all.

Checking your brine tank once a month and keeping it at least half full is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your system performing the way it should.
