So I'd like to share with you a snippet of the history of cacao - sorry, I've always been kind of a geek🤓

While the earliest evidence of processing cacao is found among the Olmec civilization in Mexico, the culture that seems to have made the widest and most durable use of cacao is the Mayan civilization. Cacao was a revered delicacy, reserved only for the noble, and used in spiritual ceremonies and offerings to the gods. So now we're starting to understand why we hear so much talk about cacao being the 'food of the Gods'. ✨
There are traces of cacao that were found in ancient Mayan pottery that were buried in the grave of elite people, so that they could take this drink into the afterworld.

The first image below shows a cacao tree growing from the body of a supernatural male figure. In the next image, a Mayan God is sitting next to a cylinder vessel that has foam coming out of the top, this is the cacao drink that had been prepared for him. Below him is a plate of 'tamales' with a cacao sauce poured on top.

How cool is that??
So here's evidence that cacao is not just a pop-up fancy drink that people just started paying attention to, and including in their ceremonies. Spiritual rituals around cacao go way back to thousands of years ago - no wonder then, that this beautiful plant is recognized as a Master Plant.

Did you know that there are 3 main varieties of cacao in the world? The Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario.
Yuyay Cacao is made from the second, the Criollo type.
The Criollo tree is native to Central and South America, and only 5% of the world’s production is Criollo.
The taste of these cacao beans is described as delicate yet complex, low in classic chocolate flavor, but rich in secondary notes of long duration. Considered to be the “prince of cocoas,” Criollo is prized as an ingredient in the very finest of chocolates. So go ahead and try our criollo Peruvian cacao! Then you'll understand why we choose to work with this superior cacao type. And those hot chocolate drinks will keep you warm and happy throughout the winter! ❄️
