What a beautiful spring day at the farm . 13 degrees . Some pictures from this morning. What a blessing to live in the Ottawa Valley.

Today we are in a time crunch to address w**d control and to start getting our fertilizer in place. Planting new seedlings the second weekend in May .

While our farm is high and dry , we realize our neighbours on the Ottawa are currently battling high water. We hope to see it stop rising soon.

Given how the fields have dried I imagine we will see many folks putting their crops shortly

Went for a walk around the farm this evening. Lots of deer and geese.

Happy Easter Sunday from all of us at MacGowans Christmas Tree Farm!

It has been 25 years since we made maple syrup. This season we tried making some on our farm. A few pails , open fire , big pot , limited filtering capability produced some amazing maple syrup with a slight smokey edge.

Brought back lots of memories and a lot of fun to spend time outdoors to create a Canadian made product using a very basic process .

No Christmas Trees were tapped! Only sugar maples.

The sleigh is coming together , almost ready for pictures ( with you our customers ). A new seat has been made so you don’t have to sit on a soggy material surface and of course it’s all red ! Just like Santa’s

We still have some metal work “bling” to finish up before it’s complete.

Let us know what you think !

Bling has been added

Well , work continues . A few setbacks along the way. It’s amazing what a coat of primer reveals. So a few more repairs done and we had an opportunity to put a couple of coats of red on. Still don’t like the coverage I am getting but we will keep at it. Learning a lot while I’m at it.

We are in the painting phase now. Replacement hardware has been acquired so we can replace all the rusty bolts as we put it back together.

Slow process with multiple coats and dry time required before recoating, but it’s coming together

We decided on a nice Christmas themed red and green.

Yet to do , build a new seat and seat back. Refinish some metalwork. We also need to put it back together.

While working on the sleigh today I was chatting online with my brother Daren. Daren Is our family historian and he reminded me of our great, great Grandfather Adam who owned and operated a carriage factory in Tw**d Ontario. ( pictured below with his team) in the early 1850’s. He immigrated from Ireland as a blacksmith.

The discussion all started around, “should we paint this sleigh using a brush ? Or should we spray paint it to try and get a finer , smoother finish? That’s when Daren sent thru this picture of our great , great grandfather , clearly holding a brush.

Now he was clearly a very very skilled craftsman which i am not, so i doubt i could get the same finish as he could get using basic tools. We will have to do some experimenting to findnout but I think i likely know the answer.

So working on this sleigh kind of feels a little like a return to where we came from. If we only had these professionals join us in the barn for some advice, that would be something! I know i could use the help.

So now I have added to my list of things to do. We need to see if we can find out what his makers mark was. How do we identify the wagons and carriages that were produced in their facility in Tw**d.

Who knows , maybe we are working on one of his sleighs !
