Last summer, we found an awesome surprise hidden amongst a patch of grey headed coneflower.
Before founding Hawthorn Farm, Kim fostered her love of plants while working on native tallgrass prairie restoration in southwestern Ontario for the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Ojibway prairie complex includes many provincially rare species of plants including dense blazing star, also known as liatris spicata.
Somehow (probably in bird poo) liatris found its way to Hawthorn and Kim’s keen eye was quick to spot it and save its seeds in the fall. Not only is this beautiful plant native to Ontario and happy to thrive within a perennial garden, it’s also a wonderful and unique option as a fresh or dried cut flower. We hope to keep working with this plant and offer it in our catalogue soon.
